Thanks to the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) data are available to allow analysis of top causes of maternal death AND have the processes in place to make change based on data and reanalysis of systems practices. Already great strides have been made in preventable death and complications from hemorrhage and early elective delivery. More to come on pre-eclampisa, heart disease and reduction in primary cesarean section deliveries.

The newly approved 9-valent HPV vaccine has the promise to prevent ALMOST ALL cervical cancers caused by HPV (which the cause of almost all). But, despite a vaccine which could prevent many types of cancer, vaccination rate is still low.

Congratulations to University of California for requiring additional vaccines for school entry, but the HPV vaccine is still only recommended but not required. If you are a young adult and not already vaccinated for HPV - consider that HPV has overtaken to***co use as the leading cause of oral, head and neck cancers in men, and while cervical cancer deaths overall have decreased, the monitoring of precancerous changes greatly impacts a young woman's life, and costs the system $6 billion dollars each year.
UC will require four additional vaccines for incoming students by 2017 Amid growing debate over the importance and safety of immunizations, the University of California announced a new policy requiring incoming students to get vaccinated for measles and chicken pox.

Caught this post too late for the mass screening yesterday, World Cancer Day, but there are other screenings (see link). An unlikely band of gyn oncologists from around the country have come together as the band "No Evidence of Disease" to raise awareness of "below the belt" cancers in women - while not as common as other cancers they are "especially lethal". Raising awareness is critical...and that's just what NED is doing.

Most pregnancies are uneventful but are not without risk. Severe pregnancy complications, also called severe maternal morbidity is being tracked so that clinical practice can be changed thru the use of data and quality improvement processes. Thanks to the enormous efforts of countless organizations and individuals, California is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a quality "Success Story". Recalling the Capitol hallways filled with anti-vaccine parents a couple of years ago when then Assemblymember Richard Pan introduced a bill to require a parent/physician discussion prior to a parent exercising the personal exemption waiver from vaccinations, these new bills will be sure to provoke discussion and bring out the crowds.
