The Barbershop Evoloved
Back in the day, Men got their haircut at the barbershop and women at the beauty salons. In the 60’s and 70’s men started wearing their hair longer. Many of them left the barbershop and started going to the beauty salons. To accommodate this trend the beauty shops renamed themselves, and the unisex salon was born.
The problem with the unisex salon was that the only thing that changed was the name. The salons were still decorated like a French powder room and smelled like a perm. They were filled with women’s magazines, blue haired old ladies and the steady buzz of gossip. Men never felt welcomed into the unisex salon. They were looked at as a extra money by the beauticians. The focus of the salon remained on the big ticket customers- women.
That being said, guys had only two choices. They could go to the barber shop or the hair salon and sit through an awkward, if not uncomfortable experience. The 80’s brought “Family Hair care” to the scenes.
