Extended Hyponychium. Doug Schoon is very clear on this. The hyponychium is living barrier tissue, not dead cuticle. It contains immune cells and forms the seal that protects the nail bed from pathogens. When this area is traumatized by cutting, scraping, or “releasing,” the body responds by producing more keratin, which makes the tissue thicker and more forward-growing. That is the exact definition of hyperkeratinization. It is a protective response, not an overgrowth that needs trimming. Cutting or detaching the living hyponychium is to ne avoided. Doug states that breaking this seal increases infection risk and worsens the problem because the body reinforces the area with even more keratin.

My Opinion:
Experience does not change anatomy. Because you’ve always done it or because you think you should do it doesn’t mean you should. The science is consistent. Preserve the living seal. Anything that disrupts the hyponychium creates more of the very issue people think they are “correcting.”
