Triathlon. Type 1 Diabetes. Technology. I am a PhD student in Information Systems, Type 1 Diabetic Ironman triathlete, and self-described tech nerd.

I almost cried when I opened a package from my first triathlon mentor Shannon and it had this cute Kona swimsuit and top from in it for my trip to the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii next week. I did my first Ironman back in 2018 without a coach and Shannon was the one to explain to me that I needed to eat, what to do with all the bags they give you for your gear, and more. Not sure what I would have done without her. 😂 Swipe ➡️ to see a goofy photo of us all those years ago and Shannon finishing Ironman Maryland 📸. She has since had to step away from tri for health issues, but all that kindness and strength is always in her heart! ♥️

My sister from another mister, Ginger Vieira .t1d.fibro.celiac wrote an amazing guide to exercising with Type 1 Diabetes. It’s a simple and practical guide that I highly recommend for all T1Ds, their caregivers, and friends.

I raced St. George 70.3 the first weekend in May. Took home 8th in my age group and got a slot for the World Championship in Lahti, Finland! Ironman Lake Placid is next on deck in July and I’m dreaming of getting to Kona!

I’ve been taking a break from the gram, but I’m excited about this year and want to share my journey through training and diabetes.

I loved being on the IronWomen podcast with Alicia .sometimes_nate - We covered so many interesting topics related to Type 1 Diabetes including racing on insulin, how racing can be made more accessible for diabetics, non-T1D athletes wearing CGMs, diabetes and the menstrual cycle, and more! My favorite part of the podcast was sharing why I decided to publicize my goal of becoming the fastest woman with T1D at Ironman in order to find more fast women with T1D as training partners. Ultimately, my quest to find more fast women with T1D failed, except for finding Alicia, which was also a crazy story! I know those ladies are out there, just waiting to show the world what they’re made of.

“I think it's sad that there are so many men with Type 1 Diabetes who are competing at a high level, both at Ironman as well as on the cycling side with Team Novo Nordisk, but the women don't have as many role models in the space. I'm hoping that's something that's going to change within my lifetime.”

Have you heard of SwimRun? It’s a newer addition to the triathlon family. I was tethered to a partner as we ran-swam-ran-swam... 25 times for a total distance of 5 miles of swimming and 18 miles of running over islands in Maine. You swim with sneakers on your feet and use a pull buoy to keep your feet up. It was an amazing experience swimming to a remote island and running over it! It was tricky to decide what to do for tech on this adventure. I put my pump in a waterproof case, which worked great, and was able to get CGM readings from my on the running portions. Unfortunately my pump site fell off towards the end with all the salt water and sweating, and I lost my syringe. A few hours without insulin could have meant ending a great race day with an annoying hospital stay. I was very thankful to the staff for finding me a fast boat back to the mainland before any major problems arose. Always be prepared!

Robot engaged! I’m participating in a research study looking at the effect of the menstrual cycle on (By the way, did you know that insulin sensitivity and glycogen uptake are different during the late luteal phase?) For the study I have to wear a but I already wear a and a watch. 🤖 The study is still recruiting so if you are a female 18-40 in the US, send me a DM if you want to participate. $$ and free

Figuring out blood sugar management while hiking has taken some experimentation but I really have it down now. I decrease basal, bolus, and correction by half and am careful not to bolus over a certain amount even for big meals. If I’m not eating much, I’ll decrease it down even more as the day goes on because our sensitivity increases with every hour of exercise.

With Covid cancelling my triathlon races, I’ve really upping my hiking and backpacking game. I’ve done twelve 4000 foot peaks in the last month with seven of them bagged this past weekend on the 20-mile Presidential Traverse. Oh, and I saw a fellow diabetic on the summit of Mount Washington. The D Tribe is strong. 💪

How Would You Handle Two Workouts with a Break Between? (Advanced Scherb Method) 11/27/2020

Today I found myself in a tricky situation for managing insulin - I woke up late and needed to eat something then had two activities back to back with a 30 minute break in between. Join me on the Glucose Advisors network to discuss how you would handle this scenario. The link is in the comments. :-)

How Would You Handle Two Workouts with a Break Between? (Advanced Scherb Method) Today I found myself in a tricky situation with managing insulin. I slept in (no time for an early breakfast), had a 45-minute pool swim, a half hour break, and a 45-minute bike ride. How would you...

Happy Easter to my Iron Peeps who celebrate! Enjoy these sugar ducks and bunnies swimming, biking, and running. This was my entry last year to the diorama contest, a tribute to Kona.
