There are a few external things I do regularly to take care of my skin: I use super effective skin care products every single day (shout out to @pourmoiskincare) and I get Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments from @healinginsight in St. Paul. Whenever I mention this, I get questions about what it’s like so I thought I’d take you along for a treatment. Nicki is an absolute angel on earth - she puts over 100 needles in my face to stimulate collagen production and address internal causes of aging. I rest alone for about 30 minutes (mamas - this is the best part) and then she removes the needles, gives me the most lovely facial massage and seals it in with a jade roller. I feel totally rejuvenated after my sessions and my skin is glowing. It’s relaxing and energizing at the same time.

What do you think about when you eat? Have you ever tuned into your thoughts mid-meal to find out?

Really we should be present with our food and bodily sensations as we eat nourishing and delightful food but our busy lives take us elsewhere. 

Often we’re thinking of the work day, the nightly routines and responsibilities and what’s to come tomorrow. Often these thoughts are  stressful. 


When the body is stressed out and enters fight or flight mode, digestion is sluggish and not at it’s best. This can cause a whole whirlwind of digestive upset and even lead to chronic problems. 

Be sure to pay attention to your thoughts next meal and see if your head is  intune with your stomach.

These three things can slow your metabolism:

1. Strict Dieting
2. Stress {changed this one}
3. Hormone Imbalances

If you over-restrict how much you’re eating it can slow down your metabolism and lead to over-eating!! Make sure you’re calculating your basal metabolic rate and basing your calories on a reasonable amount of food!

Stress is the worst when it comes to your metabolism. It raises your cortisol and leads to sugar cravings and excess belly fat. An adrenal test can help measure your cortisol and see if it’s contributing to your weight gain.

Menopause, peri-menopause, and thyroid imbalance will all slow down your metabolism. You may need to balance your hormones and get on the right hormonal diet so you can have the best metabolism possible.

When you want to lose weight, do you notice the sense of urgency that comes with it? Maybe you’ve booked a vacation, or have an event do attend, or you simply are ready to get in shape. While being eager to get on with it is great and can fuel your progress, don’t forget that weight loss is a journey. 

Sustainable weight loss comes from lifestyle habits and changes that you make incrementally so that they will last a lifetime. 

Celebrate your successes and forgive yourself when you make mistakes, just like you would on any journey.

With all the diets out there, what is the best one to help you lose weight??

The one you can stick to.

I don’t care if it’s paleo or high fat or intermittent fasting or Whole30. Whichever one you can stick to for several months without feeling hungry while still reducing how much you’re eating … that’s the one you’re going to see success with!

Want 3 ways to boost your metabolism? You got it: 

1. Try a cleanse
2. Eat loads of protein!
3. Move your body. 

A cleanse will jumpstart your weight loss AND get you off all the unhealthy food you’ve been eating.

Protein gets you metabolism going way more than carbs. So get it in at breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Exercise exercise exercise. But do something you love! Hate running? Try walking. Love group classes? Find Zumba or an online workout.

Doing just these three things in one month will help you drop weight.

Why sleep is important for your metabolism

Ahhh… sleep! As the mom of a young son, it’s the precious commodity I cherish more than anything else!

But did you know that sleep is so important for your metabolism? When we’re tired we eat more, whether it’s reaching for chocolate in the afternoon or a latte to keep us going. 

If you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll eat, on average, an extra 300 calories a day. That equals a pound of weight gain every two weeks!!

Plus a lack of sleep raises your cortisol levels and deposits extra fat around the middle, and nobody wants that!

So get some extra rest tonight … maybe even take a nap … and give your metabolism exactly what it needs!

The best food to boost to boost your metabolism:

Protein!  

The best way to boost your metabolism through food is to eat more protein. Of all the diets out there, the ones that most consistently show the best weight loss are ones that include more protein. 

For most women, the bare minimum is 65 grams of protein a day, but it should be higher if you’re doing muscle-building exercise.

What are good sources of protein? Chicken and turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, high-protein yogurt. All clean, free-range, non-GMO of course!

Shoot for 20 grams of protein at each meal, including breakfast. Your metabolism will thank you!
