One thing I wish more lash artists knew earlier:
👉 The same lash can perform completely differently depending on how it's placed. A lot of us spend time looking for a better adhesive, a better primer, or a better environment, but sometimes the real issue is attachment.

1. Top Placement creates a clean, uniform look and a darker lash line.
Perfect for:
✔ Straight to normal lashes
✔ B, C, and D curls
✔ Clients who love a neat, defined finish.

2. Side Placement is great for correcting lash direction.
If natural lashes grow sideways, cross over, or grow inconsistently, side placement can help create a much cleaner final result. Sometimes styling starts with placement not mapping.

3. Bottom Placement is ideal for:
✔ Curly natural lashes
✔ Blonde lashes
✔ Downward-growing lashes.
A small adjustment underneath can sometimes make the entire set look more seamless.

4. Wrapping Placement is where things get interesting. Many experienced lash artists consider wrapping placement one of the biggest retention upgrades you can learn.
Why? Because the extension isn't just sitting on the natural lash, it’s actually hugging it. More contact, more stability, and better attachment. And better attachment usually leads to better retention. Not because the adhesive changed, but because the placement did.

The longer I do lashes, the more I realize that retention isn't always a product problem. Sometimes it's a placement problem, and sometimes one small adjustment can completely change the result of a set.

One small detail that can totally change a lash set?
👉 Fan width.

A lot of beginner lash artists only pay attention to diameter or fullness but fan width actually makes a huge difference in how the lash line looks overall.

✔ Narrow fans = darker and more defined lash line
→ Perfect for clients who love a bold look
→ But sometimes not the best choice for sparse lashes with gaps

✔ Standard fans = balanced and versatile
→ Gives a nice mix of density and coverage
→ Usually works well for most clients

✔ Wide fans = soft, fluffy, wispy effect
→ Great for airy sets and helping fill empty spaces
→ But if every fan is too wide, the set can start looking messy or uneven

The goal isn’t always making lashes “more fluffy.”
It’s knowing which fan style fits each client best.

A lash set can look beautiful from the outside but if the placement is too close, too far, or poorly attached, problems start showing up quickly.

That’s why lash distance matters more than many artists realize.

✔ A small gap from the eyelid (around 0.5–0.7 mm) helps keep the set comfortable and healthy
✔ A proper attachment area helps extensions stay cleaner and last longer
✔ Rushing placement too close to the skin can cause pinching, irritation, and stickies

And honestly good placement is usually invisible. Clients may not know why one set feels lighter, cleaner, or lasts better than another but proper attachment is often the reason.

Because beautiful lashes aren’t just about styling. They’re also about precision and control.

👉 Understanding lash layering.

Using different lengths throughout each layer helps create better structure, softness, and dimension from every angle.

That’s where layering makes a big difference.
✔ Shorter lengths on the top layer help the lash line look softer
✔ Medium lengths in the middle keep everything balanced
✔ Slightly longer lengths underneath add depth and fullness without making the set look bulky

It’s not always about adding more lashes.
Sometimes, it’s just about using the right lengths in the right places.

But many don’t realize that certain sunscreen ingredients can slowly break down lash adhesive.

• Oil-based sunscreens
→ Can weaken the adhesive bond
→ Cause extensions to slide, twist, or shed faster
• Applying sunscreen directly onto extensions
→ Creates buildup on the lash line
→ Affects retention and fan structure over time

• Sweat + SPF residue + summer heat
→ Makes proper cleansing even more important
→ Dirty lashes = weaker retention + possible irritation

• Best practice for lash clients:
→ Choose oil-free sunscreen when possible
→ Apply carefully around the eyes
→ Wear sunglasses outdoors
→ Clean lashes daily to remove residue

💧 The Golden Rule:
✔ Dip ONLY 1/3 of the fan base
✔ Keep it light — think micro drop (1–2mm)

This is one of the most misunderstood situations in lash work:
👉 Not every red or swollen eye is an allergic reaction.
👉 And not every “discomfort” is harmless.
If you don’t recognize the difference correctly, you risk losing clients or worse, damaging their trust.

• Allergic reaction (to lash adhesive):
→ Swollen, puffy eyelids
→ Itchiness, heaviness along the lash line
→ Usually appears hours after the appointment
→ Often gets worse with repeated exposure

• Irritation / glue fume sensitivity (or scratched cornea):
→ Redness, especially in the lower eye area
→ Burning, tearing when opening eyes
→ Discomfort starts immediately or shortly after the service
→ Often caused by fumes, improper taping, or eye slightly open

Not every red eye means the same thing…
But every reaction is a sign that we need to look closer.
