I’ve realized over the years that the people you work with really do shape how your career feels.

I’m behind the chair 3–4 days a week, and working with an assistant allows me to leverage my time better while I’m there. I can still create income that supports my family and the salon, while also making space in my week to train my team, lead the business, and actually work on the things happening behind the scenes.

But beyond efficiency, I just really love the people I get to work with. My assistants are fun, quirky, smart, and keep the day moving—and I’m lucky to have clients I genuinely enjoy spending time with too. The conversations, the connection, the random life updates… that’s such a big part of what makes this career fulfilling.

You absolutely can work 3–4 days behind the chair and build a successful career. But especially as a salon owner, at some point you have to move different.

The right team. The right clients. The right systems. The right schedule.

That’s the goal for me now—not just being busy, but building a career and business and team that I actually enjoy being in.

✨ Hair extension journey from January → September ✨

The way I approach extensions isn’t just, “How long and full do you want to be?” It’s what problems are we actually trying to solve?

Investing in extensions isn’t worth it if the plan isn’t sustainable. My relationship with my extension clients isn’t just transactional, and it’s important to me that they know I’ve genuinely put thought and care into an approach that makes sense for their hair, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

For Kristine, we really needed to ditch the bright blonde. Between repeated lightening and frequent heat styling, it just wasn’t doing her fine strands any favors. We also needed to bring some depth back into her hair to better complement her skin tone.

And this bronde? Her complexion literally looks sun-kissed next to it. 🤌🏻

She’s also the perfect example of what can happen when you actually follow the plan. She listens to everything I recommend when it comes to products, heat, maintenance, and extension care—and that’s a huge part of why we have the progress we have today.

Extensions can absolutely give you more hair, but my goal is also to help you create healthier habits with the hair you already have.

Curious what approach would make the most sense for your hair? Book a consultation through the link in my bio and let’s chat. ✨

September feels like a reset in the best way 🍂

The kids are back in school, my brain space is slowly returning, and I finally have room to share some of what I’ve been working on behind the scenes.

Salon Abode has grown a lot over the last two years, and with that growth comes the responsibility to keep evolving how we support the people building their careers here.

That’s meant taking a hard look at our pay structure, benefits, education, and what I want working at Salon Abode to actually feel like long term.

We’re now offering an IRA match, PTO, maternity leave through PLO, paid training + education, commission up to 55%, and quarterly bonus opportunities. Not because I think a salon needs to compete with corporate America 😂 but because I believe talented hairstylists deserve real opportunities to build a career, not just fill a chair.

I’m proud of where we started, proud of how much has changed, and very aware that there will always be another level to build toward.

New season. New chapter. Same high standards. 🤘🏻

If you’ve been watching Salon Abode and wondering if there might be a place for you here… this might be your sign.

✨open book series✨ where I show real math in my salon.

$2,595 in January. $6,503 in August.
Same stylist. Eight months.

She didn’t change salons and she didn’t suddenly get better at hair. She was good at hair in January too. Her chair just wasn’t full.

Hours booked went from 31 a month to 83. Chair fill went from 22% to 49%. And in the last stretch it stopped being about more guests at all — she saw 33 in July and 33 in August, and made $933 more in August.

Here’s the part most people won’t say out loud: 73 new guests walked into that chair since April. About 15 a month, every month. She didn’t run an ad. She didn’t build a website. She didn’t spend her nights making content to feed a booking link she had to build first.

That’s what a salon is supposed to do. Most stylists spend their first two years being their own marketing department, and the ones who burn out aren’t the ones who were bad at hair — they’re the ones who ran out of energy before the chair filled.

Eight months. That’s the number I want people to sit with. When you need to pay the bills, there’s only so much you can stretch.

Great at hair and empty on Tuesdays? That was never a talent problem. Come talk to me.

Two stylists. Same $18,000 quarter. Same chair, same brand, same clients through the same door.

One took home about $700 a month more.

Most owners won’t show you these numbers. Here are mine, with receipts.

We run a hybrid model — commission and independent under one roof — and I get asked constantly which one is better. So I ran both, side by side, on real production.

The independent nets more. That’s real and I’m not going to soften it. But $700 a month is what she pays for it: rent on the first whether February was good or not, every tube of color out of her own pocket, her own quarterlies and the tax liability if any of it’s wrong, no Paid Leave Oregon, and time off that costs her twice.

Commission trades that $700 for everything underneath her. New clients coming in consistently, without her buying them.

A color room, back bar, and retail shelf already stocked.

A website, a brand, and marketing she didn’t have to build.

Strategy, mentorship, and education from someone fifteen years in.

After fifteen years I can tell you it’s the difference between a stylist who’s still here in year three and one who isn’t.

And here’s what doesn’t change: both get the brand, both get the booking, both get new clients from the salon every week, both get the education room and the person teaching in it. That’s the whole point of a hybrid salon. At most salons those things are reserved for one side.

Neither of you is doing this alone. One of you is just carrying more of it.
