Benign Moles vs. Atypical Moles

Not all moles look the same. Moles can vary in size, shape, color, and appearance, and these differences alone do not necessarily mean that a mole is atypical.

Benign moles are common skin growths that are often symmetrical, have relatively even borders and color, and remain stable over time. Some benign moles may be larger or have features that differ from this typical appearance.

Atypical moles, sometimes called dysplastic nevi, may have features that look different from an ordinary mole. They may be asymmetrical, have irregular borders, contain more than one color, or simply look different from a person's other moles.

An atypical mole is not the same thing as melanoma. However, people with atypical moles—particularly those with multiple atypical moles—may have an increased risk of developing melanoma.

A mole's history is also important. A mole that has been present and unchanged for many years may be less concerning than a new or changing mole. New moles that develop during adulthood may deserve closer attention, particularly when they look different from a person's other moles.

This is one reason it is important to become familiar with your skin. A mole that is new, changing, looks different from your other moles, or develops symptoms such as itching, bleeding, burning, or pain should be evaluated.

When there is uncertainty about a mole, a dermatology evaluation can help determine whether it should be monitored, biopsied, or requires no additional treatment.
