The active ingredient in sunless tan, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), works through a harmless chemical reaction called the Maillard reaction. When DHA touches your skin, it interacts strictly with the amino acids in your stratum corneum—which is literally just the dead, outer layer of skin cells.

Because DHA molecules are too large to cross the skin barrier, they cannot reach your blood vessels or endocrine system. They stay right on top, do their thing with the dead skin cells, and naturally fade away as your skin sheds. 🤎
