If you’re trying to assist or join the team of an artist you admire, there are a few things you should know before reaching out!

I love when artists take the initiative to introduce themselves, but there are a few things I always pay attention to when someone wants to work with me.

Here are 3 things I would avoid:

1. Not having a diverse portfolio. If you want to work with different clients, you need to show that you can work with different skin tones, skin types, and ages. Practice on real people, not just yourself!
2. Reaching out to artists whose style is completely different from yours. Do your research! Look for artists whose work you admire and whose style aligns with the kind of makeup you want to do.
3. Asking to observe or assist on a paid job. Remember, our clients are paying for a professional service, not a learning experience. There is a time and place for learning, so be mindful of how you approach this.

And please, don’t let this discourage you from reaching out! We all started somewhere, and the only way to gain experience and confidence is to put yourself out there, practice, and make connections.
