At the same time, concerns surrounding opioid use have increased interest in complementary, non-drug approaches that can help patients feel more comfortable during recovery.
Massage therapy is one approach that may help support post-surgical pain management and recovery when appropriate for the client and cleared by their healthcare provider.
Find out the benefits of surgical recovery massage to educate clients and make your “hands-on” approach to their pain relief an important part of their healing.

Listen and Learn as Joe discusses the importance of the Vagus nerve in massage to help shift the body from stress mode into relaxation and recovery mode. By supporting the parasympathetic nervous system, vagal activation may reduce muscle guarding, tension, protective tightness, and pain sensitivity. It can also support slower breathing, improved heart-rate regulation, deeper relaxation, better sleep, and recovery.
Integrating Vagus Nerve stimulation helps treat the whole nervous system, not just the muscles, benefiting clients with chronic pain, stress, anxiety, trauma, poor sleep, or inflammation.

Pressure Pain Threshold, or PPT, is a standardized measure used in pain, rehabilitation, and massage research to assess sensitivity to pressure. It is the minimum amount of gradually applied pressure at which a person first perceives the sensation as painful, not simply uncomfortable.
Lower PPT: Pain is felt with less pressure, suggesting greater pressure sensitivity at that tested area.
Higher PPT: More pressure is needed before pain is felt, suggesting lower pressure sensitivity at that tested area.
Researchers commonly measure PPT using a pressure algometer, a device that applies measurable pressure to a specific location.
Studies of massage, manual therapy, and trigger-point interventions may measure PPT before and after treatment. If PPT increases afterward, it means more pressure was needed to produce pain at that site under those testing conditions, one possible measure of a change in pressure sensitivity or treatment response.
PPT does not diagnose a condition by itself, and results can be influenced by factors such as the test location, device, application rate, instructions, stress, fatigue, and recent activity.

Day 3/3: Keep the Referrals Coming. Final tip: Make yourself the easy choice.
• Promise fast appointments and prompt progress notes.
• Thank referrers and refer back when it fits.
• After any referral, send a brief professional progress note (with patient consent). This is one of the highest-leverage habits for turning one-off referrals into ongoing ones.
• Focus on 1-2 strong relationships since they compound over time.
Realistic timeline: 1-3 solid sources in 2-4 months with minimal weekly effort.
Providers refer to people who help their patients and reduce their workload. Start small, stay consistent.

Day 2/3: Simple Outreach That Works
Prepare once: A clean one-page sheet with your credentials, what you treat best, and easy referral contact information.
Then: Hand-deliver to 3-5 nearby offices (start with independent practices). Tell the office manager: “I’m a local resource for therapeutic massage, and I am happy to support your patients with quick progress notes.” Leave it and follow up in 2 weeks.
Bonus: Offer the team a quick complimentary chair massage.
Remember:
- Be respectful of their time. Do not show up during peak clinic hours expecting a long conversation. Ask for the office manager, keep the initial interaction brief, leave the sheet, and offer the chair-massage option for a quieter time or staff appreciation moment.
- Primary care, physical therapy, chiropractic (selectively), sports medicine, and pain management offices are usually more receptive than highly specialized surgical practices.
- Always position yourself as a partner who supports their treatment plan, not a replacement. Stay firmly within massage therapy scope.
Small consistent actions can turn into big results. Check tomorrow for more tips! What’s your biggest referral challenge?

Day 1/3: Get Referrals the Easy Way
Massage therapists: Want steady medical referrals without tons of extra work? Start here.
1. Ask happy clients! After a great session, say: “If your doctor mentions massage for (their issue), feel free to share my info. I can coordinate care easily.” Or something like,
“When patients are getting clear benefits, I encourage them to share that with their doctor. You can mention the specific improvements you’ve noticed and ask whether they’d like to include massage in your care plan. I’m set up to share notes and communicate easily if they want that”.
2. When a client mentions their doctor, send a short progress note (with permission). This alone can spark referrals with zero cold outreach. Many patients happily advocate for you.
