I was just chatting with a PhD candidate about working together on her personal academic website. I shared with her, "this is the 1st year I have a number of graduate students reaching out for done-for-you academic website design."

While I'd love to work with this grad student on her website...
I also shared with her the no-cost option I often recommend to PhD students: Owlstown. It's a free academic website builder created by my friend, Dr. Ian Li. He's a co-host with me on the Best Personal Academic Websites Contest. Owlstown has been around for years.

One time I shared Owlstown as an option with a PhD, she said, "Don't you want my money? I want to work with you."

And I was like, yes, please. I'd love to design her retired academic father's website for her. We'd celebrate his legacy. "I just wanted you to know you don't have to work with me."
