It usually starts at the part, or right at the temples, and you notice it long before anyone else does.

You don't need a full head of extensions for this. When a client still has good density everywhere else, I place micro keratin bonds along the hairline, tiny ones, or tape-ins if her hair suits those better. Enough to fill the spot that bothers her and nothing more.

Every install gets built around three things. How dense your hair actually is, how you live, and how long you want to sit in my chair. There's no standard set.

Most tape-in hair comes in one flat color, so the grow out line shows fast. If you're a brunette with bleached blonde hair and your hair grows super fast, you might need to come in sooner than normal to get your hair moved up.

EasiHair Pro builds a rooted color into their tape-ins, bright blonde through the lengths with your natural depth at the top, so the grow out never draws that line. This look isn't for everyone, but it's nice if you are going for that more lived in color look.

The color match is the easy part. Texture is what gives people away.

This hair came to me already waved. The company steams it, just enough to put a soft bend in, so it falls the way her own hair falls instead of hanging straighter and heavier beside it. When the bend matches, the join disappears.

The goal is always the same. Hair that reads as yours on your best day. The compliment I hear most from clients is that nobody around them knows they're wearing anything.

A full install runs nine in the morning to noon, and the first stretch happens before she's even in the chair.

Her hair gets laid out on the stand and matched in real salon light first. A color match that looks right in a photo can look wrong on a head, so I settle that before a single bond goes in.

Then the rows. Sectioned, clipped up and out of the way, one strand at a time from the nape forward.

By noon she's at the swatch wall with hair she didn't grow. Three hours once, and then she's set for months.

The same hair can stay with you for close to a year.

Every four weeks you come in and I move it up. I open the bead, push everything back to where it should sit, and you go live your life for another four. When it's time, that hair comes out and goes right back in.

Cared for properly, with the right products, one set runs six months to a year. That's the part people miss when they compare prices. You're paying for hair you keep.

I got my first set of extensions because my own hair would never grow past a certain length.

It was fine and fragile and it broke constantly. Then I sat in the chair myself and walked out with hair I couldn't have grown on my own, and I've never forgotten how that felt. That was years ago and I've been doing hair for almost 30 years now.

Everyone asks me how they're supposed to sleep in these.

Braid it, one loose braid pulled over your shoulder, or wear a bonnet. A silk pillowcase does more than people expect, because it stops the friction that roughs hair up overnight.

If you wash at night, get it as dry as you can before bed, especially at the wefts. Water sitting there is what breaks them down.

The gym is easy. Tie it back and let dry shampoo do the work. I keep a paste that lifts the root while it cleans, and a few sprays for people who prefer those.
