In 2018, being on a quest to absorb all possible style related education, I found myself in LA attending an Essence Board workshop of renowned color analyst and image consultant - Jennifer Buttler.
Her idea of personal style goes beneath human’s psychological surface and allows inward characteristics of one’s emotional dimension to be expressed outwardly by visual means. Every person’s inner traits - passive, supportive, sensual, dramatic, braced, spiritual along with many others are studied and expressed through pictures of certain designs on the mood boards. In my teaching career, that’s how I would approach my students. In order for me to address their educational needs and lead them to the path of success, I would put my very best efforts into understanding their genetic inheritance, family upbringing, and all kinds of environmental and social influences. The key to success is knowing yourself, as people say. Happiness has everything to do with who we are. It is true, but knowing who we are without skill of expression wouldn’t give a clue to others on how to perceive and approach us. How many times I have witnessed vast transformational behavioral changes in people after changing their physical appearance. I paint the character and he/she plays the right role. And the interesting thing here is that I don’t paint someone else, I paint people as they are. It’s just the skill of expression. It’s like a bridge for people to step out from their inner world outdoors and behave themselves freely and openly with no judgement from the environment. Well, how could it be? Where there is authenticity there is always awe and admiration.
Speaking of Essence Board workshop, I have practiced the ideas and implemented them in my previous style posts, you could easily pinpoint pictures with inner-male, inner-child, passive, humorous, romantic, etc sides of me. I am definitely keeping “dark side” expression to myself. 🙂
Guess which mood I am expressing on these photographs?

Styling profession has it’s challenges due to lack of predictability of certain clothes being present on the market and when you have a project with time frame of two days, and in my case a full styling of bride and groom for their big day, what do you do? Are you up for the challenge?
You bet, I am.
You can’t go wrong by choosing personal style as a base, it’s timeless and guarantees client satisfaction, undoubtedly.
My bride is a very graceful, gentle, feminine and romantic type, so nothing heavy, strong or clunky was chosen to build the look. Softness with balanced steady energy was a main concept. Tiered ball gown with an emphasis on waistline was an ideal silhouette; “porcelain bisque” shade of white brought attention to the face; not polished tulle fabric gave enough texture to complement the skin; uneven cascading hem lines gave enough complexity to balance the hair style; movement and lightness of the skirt created the iridescence I was striving for. Amount of design(activity) in the created style is definitely complex: pearls are uneven, head band has lots of small details, dress is composed of many asymmetrical meandering lines. Overall coloring of clothing, jewelry and make up is on a cooler, muted side with subdued intensity. Makeup look is natural, matte (glow only on the eyelids) and diffused. Flower arrangement is repeating the complexity of the overall style with small to medium size flowers: in our case roses, peonies, pincushions, echeveria and eucalyptus.
Exuberance, buoyancy and lightheartedness are the distinguishing traits of the groom. As you could see he has a relaxed, radiant and more of a casual trendy look: single-breasted jacket, standard notch lapels, no french cuffs and cuff links, straight shirt collar, no tie or bow tie. Lots of space around the garment, not many details, smooth fabrics with slight sheen. Overall neutral to warm coloring; the suit color - smoke beige, is specifically chosen as a derivative of hair color. Special tribute to Franco Uomo menswear brand for constructing this suit in the perfect fit in the shortest amount of time possible.
Thanks to everyone who played part in this outstanding wedding preparation!

Styling a bride…

In fashion design, it’s very rare to spot a designer who can cater effectively to the aesthetics of different types of people. Creativity, talent for color/design, a good eye for fit along with the ability to separate your own style from the styles of clients, in my opinion, are the traits of the most accomplished and successful designers.
For as long as I have known Mimi Tran, she has possessed all the aforementioned qualities which is truly impressive. She ingeniously combines different elements in a garment thus addressing various style aspects that a person can possess.
In the above wedding dress from her bridal collection, you could witness a glorious harmony between my personality and the dress. We specifically chose it to show how intricate and well thought out Mimi’s work is. My youthfulness is highlighted with a “princess” silhouette, lightheartedness is expressed through the lightweight, airy fabrics; my liveliness shines through the vivacious flowers; classy side of me is expressed through the “hug shoulder“ neckline; elegance- through the slimming effect on the torso. This particular dress design carries some complexity to it (flowers give a visual feeling of lace) therefore perfectly matching with my style.
Expressing this work of art wouldn’t be possible without Marina’s advanced skills in photography. She made the flowers cheerfully pop, while adjusting the tone of the picture like an oil painting to bring out the elegance and intricacy. You get the feeling “It’s out of this world” while looking at it and I want to say the same about this team work. It’s out of this world, friends! It was such a pleasure working together!

Personal Style Services:
I would like to elaborate on my approach to how I work on Personal Styling. All my services are based on a simple idea of COLOR, STYLE, and TEXTURE/MATERIAL. All the objects we see around attract our eyes first with COLOR and then their lines and design, which we categorize as STYLE. Finally, we observe the TEXTURE and MATERIAL of the object. For example, at this moment I see a TV screen in front of me. The screen color is black and this immediately catches my eyes, then I notice that it is rectangular and finally, that it is smooth and made of glass.
COLOR ANALYSIS:
Similarly, in appearance design, the process starts by building a harmonizing with the face color palette, which along with psychological analysis defines an aesthetic direction of an individual. This is where an image consultant analyzes both internal and external aspects of the person: how a person talks, walks and behaves, taking all this into consideration to visualize how to combine all of the above and express them in colors and expand onto the body. Different categories of colors are being worked on (formal and darkest neutrals, whites, casual neutrals, skin tones, reds, the brightest or dramatic colors, alternates, subdueds, metallics, prints, and pastels), chosen from a laboratory of 20000 colors and the ones that look BEST on a person are picked (around 100 shades). It’s like trying different colorful outfits on a person and picking only the best. All the colors come in fabric swatches, and as we know fabrics express texture by default, thus also addressing the component of TEXTURE. All colors picked are of the same quality, temperature, and intensity. My main focus during this process is to bring out the FACE and all the beautiful features that it carries: choose the shades that will make the eyes looks the brightest, skin healthiest, teeth whitest, etc.
STYLE ANALYSIS:
During this process, a client receives complete knowledge of: his/her style, the components, how to build the looks, where to shop, amount of design and design weight that works best, print design, fit for the body shape, fabric suggestions, ideas of accessories, pleasing color contrasts and color harmonies, etc. Styles are defined according to Universal Style System and address not only what a person possesses naturally, but also what a person might need for their environment or type of activity they are trying to succeed in. Messages that styles give visually are explained and all the material is documented and presented thoroughly.
These two steps, give a person enough knowledge to build a capsule wardrobe, invest in the best jewelry, make-up items, and interior design elements.
Pros:
- due to all colors matching with each other, a harmonious capsule wardrobe (small or big) can be built easily
- all the jewelry and other metallic elements will be matching with the clothes
- any budget can be used and yet money will be invested into elements that work 100%
- wardrobe built on personal style becomes a timeless treasure.
- allows incorporating clothing and jewelry bought previously that is not consistent with your colors and style, thus saving you money.
-saves time dressing up for an occasion. (Not kidding: 5-10 minutes and the outfit is ready).
-most professional looks, higher self-esteem, best impressions, and compliments are guaranteed.
Cons:
-I haven’t observed or experienced any.
If a person thinks that he needs more assistance, then these next steps are taken:
Closet edit:
The client’s current wardrobe is edited and tailored. A shopping list for future additions is made.
Personal/ physical shopping:
Items from the shopping list are searched for and bought. One to multiple sessions or prolonged contracts are among the available options.
Let your clothes express who you are and lead you to become who you want to be!
P.S. In this picture you can see part of my wardrobe showing the whites, skin tones, personal neutrals, eye related dramatic and casual neutral colors.
Thanks to beautiful for modeling for me.

We all have this period in our lives where we ponder to find a direction to pursue a professional career. Whether it is after high school graduation or after years of professional experience, we review the pros and cons and weigh the financial aspects before embarking on the journey.
For me, this period happened to be a few years into motherhood. Degree in Education didn’t do me justice, since I was already homeschooling my kids, research in a laboratory with little interaction was not appealing, largely because I consider myself a people person, essentially a quintessential extrovert. With this in mind, I started exploring professions that could bring more excitement to my life while at the same time fulfill my passion for art and creativity. Through serendipity, the changes that childbirth left on my body raised many questions about the body image, that I couldn’t resist the urge to pursue something in image and styling. Extensive education in the field of image consulting, fashion design and makeup opened my eyes to a completely different world: a world where I could make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
Spending time browsing through internet to get different ideas of personal styling boosts my imagination and energizes me. Prospects of applying the ideas I come up with to people and seeing the instant effect on their mood, behavior, and self esteem level propelled me to choose image consulting as my career.
I welcome everyone to my studio and can’t wait to share all my experience and expertise. This is where a new chapter in image and personal style begins and will deliver confidence, self-awareness, and happiness to my clients.
