That callus may be trying to tell you something!

Many people think a callus is simply rough, ugly skin that needs to be cut or filed away. But at Delane’s Natural Nail Care, with the guidance of our podiatrist, we look a little deeper!

A callus often develops because of repeated pressure or friction. Your shoes, the way you walk, how your weight is distributed on your feet, or other foot issues may all contribute to why that thickened skin keeps coming back.

That’s why simply removing a callus without asking WHY it developed may only address the symptom—not the cause.

And if you have diabetes, poor circulation, neuropathy, or other health concerns, foot care deserves even greater attention. What appears to be a “small” foot problem can become much more serious when ignored or improperly treated.

🦶🏾 MONDAY FOOT HEALTH MOMENT: What’s REALLY happening to those tools before they touch your hands and feet?

At Delane’s Natural Nail Care, we believe a beautiful manicure or pedicure should NEVER come at the expense of your health.

One of the most important things happening in a nail salon actually takes place between clients—when no one is watching.

Reusable stainless-steel implements must be properly cleaned and disinfected before they are used on another client. That means removing debris, thoroughly washing the implements, drying them, and completely immersing them in the appropriate EPA-registered disinfectant for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer.

And those nail files, buffers, pumice stones and other porous, single-use items?

🗑️ ONE CLIENT. ONE USE. THEN THEY GO IN THE TRASH.

They should NEVER travel from one client's hands or feet to another person's.

Why does this matter?

Because nail services sometimes involve tiny cuts or breaks in the skin. Improper infection-control practices can expose clients to bacteria, fungi and viruses. Sanitation isn't simply about whether a salon looks clean. Clean-looking and properly disinfected are two very different things.

And let's talk about those pedicure thrones with the relaxing jets! 🫧

Pedicure equipment requires meticulous cleaning and disinfection between clients. Systems that circulate water have components that must be properly cleaned and disinfected because microorganisms and debris can remain in areas you can't necessarily see. That beautiful bubbling water isn't enough to tell you whether the equipment was properly disinfected.

Here's my challenge to you: ASK QUESTIONS.

The next time you get a manicure or pedicure, ask:

“What is your sanitation and disinfection procedure between clients?”

A properly trained professional should be able to explain their procedure confidently and without hesitation.

Ask whether reusable implements are cleaned and disinfected after every client. Ask whether files and buffers are single-use. Ask how the pedicure equipment is cleaned between clients.

You are NOT being difficult.
You are NOT being picky.
You are protecting your health.
