May is brain tumor awareness month and in a few days, we will have reached 18 months since my dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, the most aggressive primary brain tumor.

Today, we sit in ICU at Ivy Barrow after his 4th brain surgery. The tumor keeps fighting him, but he continues to fight back.

In the last year and a half, he's undergone two types of chemo, radiation, biweekly infusions, PT, OT, wore optune, and he is now in a clinical trial. At this point, we wait to see if the new drug crossed the blood brain barrier to determine our next steps.

A lot of people would say he's one of the best people they know and he would do anything for anyone. If God really existed, he wouldn't have chosen him. There's no life lesson to be learned with this disease and there's no bu****it about "if He brings you to it, he will bring you through it." I'm a little angry about the whole situation.

Joe Biden's son passed away from Glioblastoma. Joe Biden needs to do better at bringing awareness to this disease.

Cases of Glioblastoma will continue to rise. There are researchers studying the correlation between Glioblastoma and covid, as well as Glioblastoma and the covid vaccine.

Our doctor at Ivy Barrow told us it has been years since any new interventions have made it past phase 3 of clinical trials. Germany and Mexico offer a vaccine that has shown promise, but unfortunately, in the US, big pharma wants to price it at $90,000.

Until Biden does something about the healthcare system (or we elect someone who will), I'll pull out my soapbox on social media.

Anyway, it's uncertain what the next few days will bring. Requesting good vibes.

This is why flexibility and balance matter.

I'm a conspiracy theorist when it comes to the medical profession, health insurance, and pharmaceutical industry. Or maybe I'm just jaded.

If you've watch Live to 100 on Netflix, it's apparent that movement is the gold standard to living longer.

Then why don't doctors encourage or inquire about it?

I mean, hell, half the time doctors don't even look at your chart before they see you. Side rant.

They don't get rich off healthy people.

Take responsibility for your own health and stop putting money in the pockets of big pharma, insurance and doctors WHEN you don't HAVE to.

Of course we need access to doctors and drugs, but there are a lot of illnesses that can be remedied by just fkn taking care of yourself.

One year ago today, my parents came over for a pumpkin carving party at a friend's house. I'd noticed my dad seemed... off, but nothing noticeable to anyone who doesn't interact with him on a regular basis.

We considered the possibility that he filled his Yeti with margaritas, but it turned out to be water.

Before they headed home, I jokingly said, "dad, I think you need to get your fkn head checked." This was Sunday evening.

On Monday, my mom called and said he made an appointment with his doctor because, as stubborn as he is, he must have realized something wasn't right.

Two days prior he had finished the kitchen backsplash in their new home, but later said he didn't remember doing it.

He was able to get into his doctor on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Upon arrival, the receptionist told him his appointment was at 2 p.m. and turned him away. As it turned out, his appointment was at 4 p.m. and the receptionist was incorrect.
...His appointment was rescheduled for Friday.

On Friday, the doctor immediately sent him to the emergency room for an MRI where his symptoms began to rapidly progress to aphasia and right side weakness.

MRI results indicated there was "something" on his brain, but surgery was the only way of knowing what it was.
...Nearly 24 hours later, he was finally transferred to the first hospital that had a bed available and that would be "capable" of investigating his case further.

The neurosurgeon speculated it was an infection, which very well could have been the case as he had hernia surgery one month prior.

Surgery day took place on November 7th. My sister came in from California and we waited with our mom through surgery.

WHAT A RELIEF! The neurosurgeon excitedly came to deliver the news, in the busy waiting room, that she was sure it was an infection.
...I've become very well versed in discerning medical documents since this happened, but at the time, I wasn't.

His next MRI stated suspicion for glioblastoma which was later confirmed by the biopsy.

The doctor couldn't have been more wrong.

One month later, a surgeon from Ivy Barrow had to go back in and remove the remainder of the tumor that had been left behind because it was treated as an infection.

Three surgeries later, radiation, chemo, and immunotherapy, the last year has been a rollercoaster of uncertainty for our family, but today my dad is doing well, relative to the diagnosis.

We try to get in two workouts per week, in addition to his prescribed therapy. Movement makes a difference.

Glioblastoma is the most common and most aggressive primary brain tumor.

While the disease has been around for many many years, I believe that cases of glioblastoma will continue to rise and researchers will find a correlation between glioblastoma and covid-19.

In a study conducted by researchers at Lodz University of Technology, incubation of normal and tumor glial cells with Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 mRNA vaccine led to alterations in the biochemical profile of various cell organisms.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine has also began researching commonalities between the spike in protein that occurs in covid-19, similar to what is seen in glioblastoma, melanoma, breast and bladder cancer.

The most important thing we can do is advocate for my dad's health now and I will continue to bring awareness to the disease, but this isn't a coincidence.

I started Slice of Life Training Co. earlier this year as it became apparent that life is too short to wait for tomorrow. It's also an homage to Dexter, dad's favorite show.
