Most people think hair “turns grey.”
But biologically, that’s not what actually happens.

Grey hair appears when the follicle stops producing pigment.

Inside every hair follicle are specialized pigment cells called melanocytes. These cells create melanin, the molecule responsible for brown, black, blonde, and red hair colors. As hair grows, melanocytes transfer melanin into the hair shaft — giving the strand its color.

When those melanocytes slow down or stop functioning, new hair grows without pigment. The strand becomes white or transparent, and when mixed with darker hairs it appears grey.

So what causes melanocytes to stop working?

Several biological mechanisms can contribute:

• Aging of melanocyte stem cells inside the follicle
• Oxidative stress damaging pigment production pathways
• Genetics influencing when greying begins
• Stress signaling that prematurely exhausts pigment stem cells
• Nutritional deficiencies such as B12, iron, copper, or zinc
• Hormonal and thyroid imbalances
• Autoimmune processes affecting follicle biology

This is why greying can happen at very different ages for different people.

Some individuals notice their first grey hair in their twenties, while others maintain pigment well into their forties or fifties.

And sometimes grey hair can even partially reverse — especially if the trigger is stress or nutritional deficiency rather than permanent stem cell depletion.

Understanding the biology of the hair follicle helps separate myths from real science when it comes to hair health.
