Every year, the week before 9/11, and in honor of all those who lost their lives, I watch footage and hear stories about all the brave people—first responders, civilians, public service workers, and shop owners—reacting, surviving, loving, supporting, defying, and responding to one of the worst events in American history.

Through tragedy we see the true nature of the human spirit, and it’s something to remind ourselves of as much as possible.

I remember that morning well.

I was at a drum and dance workshop in Santa Cruz the weekend before, and as I got ready to leave Tuesday morning to take a five-hour drive home, I saw some friends off who were not acting in integrity. A poignant message came through me as I stood by the passenger side door of their car.

Thinking it was meant “for them,” I said, “I hope you both know that as of today, nothing is ever going to be the same again.” It didn’t feel like me speaking. I slammed the door before they drove off, looking bewildered.

When I got on the freeway and turned on the radio, I heard the news about the attacks on the World Trade Center. And indeed, things were never the same.

Terrorists may change shape or take different names, but the hatred is thousands of years old. And what starts with the Jews never ends with the Jews, though people will always find a way to weave false narratives and equivalencies.

Keep doing what brings you joy, and give more to others in this life. It honors all those who did till their last day.

Therapists – MindClay 01/23/2026

I wanted to share something I’m really excited about and beginning to thoughtfully integrate into my work.

Much of the therapeutic process unfolds between sessions, and that in-between time can be just as meaningful as what happens in the therapy room. Practices meant to support reflection, regulation, or integration don’t always land easily, and many clients find traditional “homework” hard to sustain on their own.

I was recently introduced to Mindclay, an online therapeutic creative arts platform created by a company headquartered here in Santa Barbara, and I truly believe there’s something special here. Mindclay allows therapists to offer clients self-guided therapeutic art, music, movement, and writing practices that support the therapeutic process between sessions.

There are close to 40 thoughtfully designed exercises spanning mindfulness, benefit-finding, cognitive reframing, somatics, and multifaceted creative expression through poetry, art, music, and movement.

As a clinician, I appreciate that the platform allows for thoughtful continuity and structure, while still offering clients flexibility and creative choice. After seeing a Mindclay demonstration, I became genuinely excited to try the exercises myself and have loved what I’ve experienced so far.

For clients who are interested in more embodied, creative ways of engaging with therapy—especially between sessions—this may be a meaningful resource to explore together.

There are subscription options designed to be accessible across different needs and caseload sizes.
