We are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals on a daily basis, whether it’s from our food, the air we breathe, or the products we put on our bodies. Finding ways to reduce the amount of toxins we are exposed to is so important as there are direct links to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption. After years of cleaning up my diet by eating mostly organic non-processed foods I began to explore other ways I could decrease my family’s exposure to harmful chemicals. Our skin is our largest organ so I knew I needed to take a close look at what I was putting on my skin every day. After doing some research on skin care products and makeup I learned that in the U.S. there has not been a law or regulation passed to control the beauty industry since 1938! That means that companies are allowed to use known toxins in their products. The European Union has banned or restricted nearly 1,400 ingredients while the US has banned only 11. In the 60s 1 in 20 U.S. women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Today, 1 in 8 U.S. women will be diagnosed with only 10% of these women having a genetic link to the disease. Perhaps a connection to the daily exposure of toxic chemicals? I came across Beautycounter’s products on my quest to clean up my beauty regimen. For the past couple of years I have tried numerous times to switch to cleaner, healthier products but I always found myself very overwhelmed - often reading long confusing ingredients lists and ending up not satisfied with the products I bought. Beauty counter takes the guess work out of it all because they use only the cleanest ingredients available and have banned 1,500 chemicals. Beautycounter’s mission is to change the the beauty industry to ensure that there will be new laws passed regulating beauty products - keeping companies accountable for the ingredients they choose to put in their products. They’ve developed chic, beautiful, effective products while putting their customers’ health first. I chose to be a part of Beautycounter’s mission as a way to help get safe products in the hands of all my friends and family.
