Sensible Covid prevention from the international community of epidemiologists: what we know about the real infection death rate (.2%), who is vulnerable and who is not, herd immunity, and why lockdown policies are the wrong approach.
A Sensible and Compassionate Anti-COVID Strategy - Imprimis We should respond to the COVID virus rationally: protect the vulnerable, treat the people who get infected compassionately, develop a vaccine. And while doing these things we should bring back the civilization that we had so that the cure does not end up being worse than the disease.

An epic adventure to Portland to visit the gravesite of my grandfather with my cousin Alice Dixson that made me both laugh and cry. It’s a micro story about inter-generational healing (sadly, we never met our grandfather), that happens to capture me eating not only a hotdog from a street vendor in downtown Portland on a Friday night, but also famous !!! !
Lost in PORTLAND with my cousin, Camilla // Alice Dixson Escapades with my cousin in downtown Portland 🌇 I have never ever been to Oregon before - even if my grandpa is from Multnomah county. Anong meron dito? Let'...

Gail Shepherd interviewed with Camilla Griggers on NPR’s Hidden Brain
It started with a love letter from long ago…and ended with a children’s story about healing from trauma. In this episode of Hidden Brain, host Shankar Vedantam interviews Gail Shepherd, author of The True History of Lyndie B. Hawkins, about the untold story behind the coming-of-age story Gail wrote about a white girl in the south, based originally on my personal story as an Asian-American girl growing up with a traumatized veteran father. Using his emotionally raw interview style, Vedantam asks hard questions about the politics of Gail’s decision, searching for the hidden truth that motivates our behaviors, shapes our choices, and directs our relationships—all in the name of telling the right story to children.
Because Gail Shepherd died suddenly of brain cancer after the show was recorded, this Hidden Brain episode includes precious recordings of Gail talking about her creative process in context of the politics of race facing authors on all sides of a spectrum of color that is itself separatist. She talks about the ethics guiding both white women authors and women writers of color who would rather fix the diversity gap in children’s literature than fight about it. It's a conversation we all need to hear now in the middle of America’s race relations revolution. Because it's a discussion urgently needed regarding the stories we tell to children about who we are, about the history of how we got here, and about truth telling itself—including who gets to tell whose story. At its core, this is what Gail Shepherd’s book for children who are coming of age is really about—how to tell the truth about our history, both personally and collectively, especially when part of the story is traumatic. That story, the story of trauma, is universal. And stories about characters learning to heal from trauma is universal as well.
Big thanks to Jenny Schmidt who conceived of the episode and worked so hard and lovingly to help produce it. I’ve never met a more empathetic journalist with such a clear devotion and instinct to following the hidden story. Her questions, dribbled out innocently over time, dove deep to touch the truth that matters most. Host Shankar Vedantam, using his unorthodox mix of science and storytelling with unabashedly candid interviewing that makes Hidden Brain so insightful, cuts through the obvious to reveal what’s hidden unconsciously beneath the surface of the Truth—including unearthing Gail and my love letters to each other from long ago, some of which he asked us to read to each other for the episode. Bless him for that opportunity to voice my love again to this incredible creature, Gail Shepherd, before she transitioned.
I walked away from this episode feeling that when we love someone across lines of difference, whether in terms of race or gender identity or culture or whatever division, we create shared experiences that empower us and authorize us to tell a more complex story about ourselves and each other. A more diverse story, because love enables us to understand and embody the unity in our experiences. The episode also reveals how the black and white of the race fight in America can end up excluding Asian Americans who often get left out of the story.
I know Gail is listening to this Hidden Brain episode from some dimension of the universe, where she continues her work for future worlds to come. May we all unite with her in that endeavor. I know she would want it that way. Thanks to NPR for dropping this emotionally intelligent and politically astute Hidden Brain episode onto the interwebs on Monday July 20, 2020. I invite you to tune into the conversation.
Culture Wars And The Untold Story Of Lyndie B. Hawkins : Hidden Brain In 2019, a novel by a new author, Gail Shepherd, arrived in bookstores. The True History of Lyndie B. Hawkins tells the story of a young white girl growing up in the South. The book has been well received, but it is not the book Shepherd intended to write. In her original drafts, Shepherd, a white a...

Passing this on,
Please forward to friends in LA
Peaceful, silent protest from home.
This Wednesday June 3rd, at 9:00 pm, for exactly 8 min and 46 seconds, let's go outside our homes and shine a flashlight into the sky. That's the amount of time that Floyd had a knee on his neck, pleading for his life.
All we need to do is to go outdoors (rooftop, front yard, back yard, street, any place outdoors) and turn on a flashlight, or emergency light, and point it to the sky for exactly 8 min and 46 seconds starting at exactly 9:00 pm.
Let's get the entire city of Los Angeles to do it, let's show that we, the people, can come together peacefully, even when we are forced to be apart. Let's show that we care, and that we do not want more violence, we want change.
A light in the dark symbolizes hope, and I hope that we can incite change with a simple, yet powerful 8 min and 46 seconds gesture. It really takes nothing to join this at-home protest and we can make the city of LA bright.
Wednesday June 3rd, would be 9 days from Floyd’s murder. He lost his life in almost 9 minutes by police unnecessary brutality. Let’s come together and peacefully show that it’s not okay and that we demand change.

In the divine equation of the emotions, love is more healing than anger. Let us love each other after these protests are done. Let us go forward and not go back. Let us transcend rather than sink deeper into the mire. Let us evolve now into our higher forms. It’s the perfect time. 💕 Because now is always the best time to heal. @ Santa Monica, California

Santa Monica beach opens tomorrow! So happy, because closing parks and beaches where people go to be healthy by being barefoot in the sun and exercising is just so...well...wrong. It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how we build natural immunity. Stopping people from exercising outdoors to stay healthy is maladaptive, not adaptive. We can do better than this. And will have to to be sustainable.

The sick care industry we have now is built on all our “I don’t knows.” Health insurance corporations, medical service providers, hospitals, pharmaceutical brands and even doctors sell services and products to consumers because people don’t know how to sustain their own health. The system runs on people’s lack of knowledge. Only we can change that, by changing our attitude about deliberate ignorance and choosing to get informed.
