🚨 WHY DOES PARKING REQUIRE A GUESS?

Here’s one of my biggest problems with Sarasota’s parking system:

You have to guess how long you’re going to stay BEFORE you know how long you’re going to stay.

Going to lunch?
Will it take 45 minutes or 90?

Shopping downtown?
Will you find what you need in 20 minutes—or stop in three more stores?

Meeting a friend for coffee?
Better guess correctly.

Because if you guess wrong and stay too long, you haven’t simply failed to pay for the additional parking time.

You’ve created an opportunity for a parking ticket.

And that’s where the economics get interesting.

The City can make considerably more from a parking violation than it would have made simply collecting the additional parking fee.

Now imagine a different system:

Park your car.
Enjoy downtown.
When you’re ready to leave, pay for the actual amount of time you parked.

No guessing.
No overpaying “just in case.”
No rushing back to your car.
And far fewer opportunities to turn an ordinary customer into a parking violator.

If the purpose of paid parking is to collect a reasonable fee for using a public parking space, why shouldn’t we simply pay for the time we actually use?

But if the system depends financially on parking citations, suddenly requiring people to guess their time makes a lot more sense.

Guessing creates violations.
Violations create tickets.
Tickets create revenue.

I don’t have a problem with paying a reasonable amount to park.

I have a problem with designing a system where being wrong about how long lunch takes can become significantly more lucrative than the parking itself.

Downtown Sarasota should make it EASY to come downtown, park, shop, eat and stay awhile.

Our parking system should support downtown commerce—not create a financial incentive for customers to make a mistake.

🚨 SARASOTA: POSTPONED DOES NOT MEAN SOLVED.

One of the easiest ways for a controversial issue to disappear is simply to let time pass.

The meetings end.
The headlines disappear.
People get busy.
Everyone assumes somebody else is watching.

And six months later, we suddenly discover that the issue we thought was “handled” was really just kicked down the road.

That is exactly why SRQ Watchdog needs to remain vigilant about parking.

We raised our voices. We got attention. We forced a conversation.

But we have not solved the underlying problem.

We still need to ask the bigger questions:

Why does parking cost what it costs to operate?

How much enforcement does Sarasota actually need?

How dependent is the system on citation revenue?

Are the rules designed primarily to manage parking—or to generate revenue?

Could technology reduce operating and enforcement costs?

And most importantly:

Are our parking policies helping or hurting the small businesses that make downtown Sarasota worth visiting in the first place?

These questions don’t disappear because the immediate controversy quiets down.

In fact, that’s when we need to pay the MOST attention.

Government budgets, policies and programs have a way of becoming permanent when the public stops watching.

So we’re going to keep watching.

We’re going to keep reading the budgets.

We’re going to keep asking questions.

We’re going to keep comparing Sarasota with other cities.

And we’re going to keep reminding our elected officials that “we’ll address it later” cannot become “everyone forgot about it.”

This isn’t about being anti-parking meter.

It’s about accountability.

It’s about protecting downtown.

It’s about making sure taxpayer dollars are being spent responsibly.

And it’s about making Sarasota a place where residents, visitors and small businesses can thrive.
