It’s not really an issue I personally face much anymore but it definitely breaks my heart to see that all these years after slavery ended and we’ve been “integrated” and there’s “equality”, my people are still expected to work as if they’re indentured servants. Expected to make a fraction of what their counterparts make to work on textures that honestly require more work to begin with.
Not only is this definitely not fair, it’s honestly disrespectful and that’s rule number one why I don’t ever debate my prices with ANYONE. Because what you’re really saying to me is “you don’t deserve that” and I’m definitely not gonna convince you otherwise, I’ll just make room and put in the effort for those who see my value and who want to see me win.
And this isn’t to shame anyone shopping on a budget either because I do give backs all the time and if I feel led by the spirit, I do complimentary services time to time. The issue is people feeling entitled to your services at the price they can afford. That’s asinine and I don’t participate in that.

Premium pricing requires maximum effort. There’s no way around it. There are two main GUARANTEED ways I’ll tell anyone to gain major success in this industry, and both are NON-NEGOTIABLE.
1. Top dollar = maximum effort. I think this is truly the only ethical way to stand behind your pricing and truly build a sustainable business where clients are lined up out the door waiting to get in your chair. Do stylist do the bare minimum for top dollar, sure but that doesn’t last. You’ll have a negative reputation and poor client retention. Put in the work and go the extra mile for your guests and you won’t have room for the amount of clients who will be trying to get in with you.
2. Never stop learning. I’m a broken record at this point. But clients will be more than happy to invest in a brand that’s constantly growing and evolving. Their hair is an investment. And like any investment, clients wanna see a return on that investment. Seeing you constantly increase pricing with no added value is a sure way to run yourself in a deficit. Instead always look for opportunities to learn and guests will be delighted to pay whatever your price is.
