Mistakes I made as a Hairstylist: (PART ONE)

1. Doing hairstyles I didn’t enjoy: I would immediately feel nervous and stressed doing certain styles that was not fun for me or I didn’t feel confident doing. This year, I decided to remove certain styles from my menu and SPECIALIZE in what I enjoy doing. There is always room for improvement and new techniques to discover in the things I enjoy to do.

2. Charging “local” prices because I’m in a smaller city: I use to compare prices to other stylist in the area. I use to think these “small town” folks is not going to what to pay this price. That is simply not true. Over the years, I have lost clients but I have gained SO MANY great clients who respect me as a professional and are willing to pay the prices I set. Although I still feel like I’m currently making this mistake because I deserve much more…I do understand people will pay for what they want and for better experiences.

3. Working on my days off & not charging an after hours fee: Whew, people will really take advantage of your time. This mistake definitely changed after I had my daughter. I had to realize time is SO PRECIOUS. Kids grow up so fast and I’m just not willing sacrifice my time from my child/myself to make a few extra dollars. It’s not worth it to me. But days off are ESSENTIAL to my creativity. I want to be able to wake up everyday feeling excited to do hair and not drained from working 20 days straight.

4. Not asking for deposits: Again, people will waste your time if you let them. I starting requiring deposits this year and has relieved so much anxiety from last minute cancellations. It doesn’t matter how nice and understanding you are, some people just don’t respect entrepreneurship. A lot of people don’t have business mindsets so it’s up to me to create policies that I stand on & that benefits the goals of my business.
