Managing Fine and Thin Hair – My Do’s and Don’ts

Fine hair is much more fragile than coarse thick hair, so you really do need to treat it with care.
DO’s

Easy does It

Every time you wash your hair try to be as gentle as possible. Fine hair is extremely delicate and can break easily ( especially when it’s wet ), so I always be sure to gently massage the shampoo into the hair.

Condition Ends Only

Fine hair can easily be weighed down so when I condition the hair I focus on the ends only. Typically, I won’t condition up past the bottom of my ears, just to make sure that it won’t weigh down the roots of the hair once it dries.

Rinse with Cold Water!
Every one really should DO THIS!

I know it’s really nice to take a steaming hot shower, but it’s really not the best for your fine hair. try to shower in luke warm water, and then when I rinse out the hair at the end I turn the tap to cold. It’s a shocking few seconds, but your hair will thank you!

Gently Brush

Make sure that when you brush your hair you’re using a wide tooth comb or a brush that is gentle on your hair. Typically like to loosely run my fingers through thr hair and then brush it out with a gentle hair brush with flexible bristles.

Use Dry Shampoo for Touch Ups

It’s best to not wash your hair every single day, so on those in between days dry shampoo is a great option. I find dry shampoo gives the hair a little bit more volume, and just adds a little bit of life back during those in between wash days.

Get Regular Blunt Haircuts

Because fine hair splits and breaks more easily it’s a good idea to get regular haircuts. I would trim the hair about every 6-8 weeks or so to get rid of any split ends. I feel like a blunt hair cut works best. I like having the ends even and one length with minimal layers. Thinned out ends can sometimes give the appearance of even thinner hair because your ends will get stringy faster.

Sleep with a Scrunchie

If your hair is down then it may be more prone to knotting up, so a loose high bun usually does the trick for me.

DON’Ts

Don’t Brush with a Fine Tooth Comb

Never, ever brush your hair with a fine-tooth comb or brush. That will just cause breakage, and more damage. Frankly, try to avoid brushing your hair as much as possible, because it can even flatten out fine hair more.

Don’t Overuse Products

Like I mentioned before products weigh down your hair, so try to avoid using too many products in your hair at once. The less the merrier in this case.

Don’t Sleep on Really Wet Hair

When washing the hair at night always try to give it enough time to dry before going to bed. If you go to bed with soaking wet hair then chances are you’re going to wake up with it being a hot mess. Fine hair doesn’t bounce back easily like thicker hair because there isn’t enough weight so often you’ll wake up with weird kinks, or frizzy bits. It’s better to wait until your hair is dry before bed.

Don’t Use Heat Often

Try to avoid using heat on your hair as much as possible ( blow drying, curling, or straightening ). I recommend only use heat once per week or once every two weeks to avoid damage and breakage. We all know that heat isn’t the best for your hair, so just be extra cautious if you have fine and thin hair.

Hey vivids.. did you know?!Warm water opens the hair's cuticle, or top layer, and since vivid colors sits on top of the hair the more you blast that cuticle open with hot water the more color is also removed. I recommend a conditioning regimen to help your colors last. "Use conditioner and cool water as much as you like and try to only use a shampoo once a week (or less!) you can still scrub your scalp with the conditioner to loosen grime and grease but it strips the color less and the cold water helps to keep the cuticle closed, when you do shampoo, make sure to use one that is sulfate free.
