Photos of Postpartum Alopecia (hair loss) AKA Telogen Effluvium.

The hair follicle has the three phases of growth. The Anagen Phase (growth phase), the Catagen Phase (intermediate phase) and the Telogen Phase (resting or shedding phase). Normally 85-95% of hair is growing and 5-15 % is in the resting phase. Women, on average, shed about 100 hairs per day.

Telogen Effluvium, ( also called Postpartum Alopecia when paired w post pregnancy ) is a condition where you lose hair after you have delivered a baby. According to the American Pregnancy Association more than 50% of woman will experience postpartum alopecia.

During pregnancy, due to an increase in Estrogen levels, hair stays in a resting phase for longer. You will lose hair less on a daily basis. After birth however, your hormones settle down and estrogen levels drop. Hairs begin to shift into the shedding phase. During this time you may notice a considerable amount of hair in your hair brush or shower. You may also begin to notice some thinning on your head. Often times women see this thinning the most in the temple area, but it can occur throughout the entire head. Usually by the baby's first birthday you should be back to your normal self.

WHAT DO I DO
First of all, take a deep breath. It's completely normal. Be gentle with yourself, you're a brand-new mother and you have enough to worry about!

1. Avoid using shampoos labeled "conditioning shampoo" - these shampoos tend to weigh down the hair and make them very heavy, often times causing more hair loss.
2. Use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush. This will keep you from pulling on the hair so much. Also be gentle during combing especially when your hair is wet because the hair is more prone to breakage when it is wet.
3. Experiment with different hair products and styles. Often times using root lifting mousses or volumizers will help create the appearance of thicker hair. Short haircuts seem to work well for new moms. Not only do they help with the weight pulling on the areas of thinning but they're easier to take care of with the demands of a newborn.
4. Try using a product like Toppik
https://www.toppik.com/
Products like this (or similar products) are meant to cover up the areas of the scalp and create the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.
5. Visit a Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon for nonsurgical treatment such as PRP. PRP or platelet rich plasma is a suitable treatment for helping temporary hair loss. Platelets are derived from your own blood and then injected back into the scalp in the areas of thinning. PRP works to regenerate stem cells in the hair and stimulate new cell growth.
6. Most of the time by the baby's first birth day the thinning areas should begin to regrow. If it doesn't however, a Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon, can help discuss further options such as additional PRP treatments, laser light therapy, oral therapy and surgical hair restoration.

Children are the center of our souls, but thinning after delivering a baby can cause an extremely unnerving experience. Just know that there IS HOPE.

So, we are doing a Crown case today on this Memorial Day weekend. We harvested 1,562 grafts yielding approximately 3,400 hairs.

Our patient is a first timer with average donor hair.

Today, I have 2 world class surgical technicians, Carol and Roxanne helping me along with my Practice Manager/Medical Assistant, my beautiful wife Jaime.

We also did 7cc PRP placed into the crown recipient area immediately prior to placing the hairs.

Here are some pictures from today's case.
