Sometimes hair loss is not about “bad hair.”
Sometimes it’s the nervous system screaming for help.

This client has lived with Trichotillomania for over two decades. What started as anxiety after a traumatic car accident became compulsive hair pulling during one of the hardest seasons of her life — her mother’s cancer diagnosis.

Behind the chair, I see stories like this more often than people realize.

Not every bald spot comes from genetics.
Not every thinning area comes from hormones.
And not every client feels safe enough to tell you what’s really happening.

The nervous system and the hair growth cycle are deeply connected. Chronic stress, trauma, anxiety, hormonal shifts, autoimmune responses, and compulsive behaviors can all show up through the scalp long before someone says a word out loud.

What matters most is this:
Compassion changes everything.

No shame.
No “just stop pulling.”
No judgment.

Instead:
-strategic extension placement
-soft dimensional color for visual density
-part shifting
-therapy support
-nervous system awareness
-tools that help redirect compulsive behaviors
-and creating a safe chair where someone feels seen instead of embarrassed.

Hairdressers are often the first people to notice when someone is struggling.

Sometimes the transformation is not just cosmetic.
Sometimes restoring confidence is part of healing the nervous system too.

This is why Hair. Body. Mind. matters.

Hair restoration has changed dramatically over the years.

In Hair Body Mind, I talk about the growing number of therapies and procedures available today-
from PRP and microneedling to AI-assisted FUE transplants.

This client began losing hair in his 20s and eventually chose a robotic FUE procedure using 4800 grafts.

What stood out most to me was not only the technology…
but how personal the experience was for him.

Hair loss affects confidence, identity, stress levels, and emotional wellbeing in ways most people don’t fully understand until they live it.

Two years later, he’s extremely happy with the results and continues maintenance therapy with PRP and finasteride.

❤️

This chapter is about education, options, awareness, and understanding that every hair loss journey is different.

“Your hair was so long before surgery… what happened?”

This is what many people do not understand about post-surgical hair loss.
The body does not care that the surgery was elective. Trauma is still trauma to the nervous system and body.

This client underwent two back-to-back surgeries with complications.
Six months later, the difference was dramatic.

The photo with the long hair was before surgery.
The shorter hair was after.

When the body experiences:
• anesthesia
• physical trauma
• inflammation
• medications
• rapid weight loss
• stress on the nervous system
• complications during healing

…it can push the hair cycle into a massive shedding phase known as telogen effluvium.

And yes — often the longest hairs are the first to go.

Why?
Because the older, longer hairs are already further along in the growth cycle and are more vulnerable when the body suddenly redirects energy toward survival and healing.

As hairdressers, we see this all the time behind the chair.
Clients blame themselves.
They think they ruined their hair.
They panic when handfuls start coming out months after surgery without realizing the trigger already happened.

Hair loss after surgery is not “just cosmetic.”
It affects confidence, identity, femininity, mental health, and recovery itself.

This is why education matters.
Your hair is often telling the story your body has been through long before words do.

My favorite from last week!

For years, women sat in my chair asking the same question:

“What is happening to my hair?”

But over time, I realized the real question was usually deeper than that.

What was happening in their lives?

Stress.
Hormones.
Health struggles.
Emotional exhaustion.
Trauma.
Burnout.

Hair loss was often the visible symptom of something invisible.

That realization changed the way I approached everything behind the chair…
and eventually became the reason I wrote this book.

I didn’t write this book because I had all the answers.

I wrote it because of what I kept seeing-
over and over again-behind the chair.

Women trying everything to fix their hair…

but the problem was never just their hair.

It was stress they were carrying.
Hormones shifting.
Health struggles they didn’t fully understand.
Life happening all at once.

And no one was connecting the dots.

So I started paying attention.

And eventually… I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

This book was written to bring those pieces together-
so you can understand what your body is trying to say
before it gets louder.
