For our Spellbinding Style October special, we took a journey through time and space. Reimagining the haunting history of 1920s Radium Girls through a neon, cosmic lens. Precision finger waves, speakeasy bobs, and vintage noir glam dipped in spectral, UV reactive stardust, glowing in the dark like the women painting dials in a factory over 100 years ago.
Radium was everywhere. Cosmetics, personal care items, foods, novelty items, and clothing were infused with radium. The health effects created protective laws around radium.
Thankfully nowadays you can glow without consequence.

Over a century ago, women in factories painted clock dials with radium paint. They were instructed to point the brushes with their lips, and told it was perfectly safe. So they painted themselves with the paint to go out dancing. Not only that, the radium dust covered their clothes, hair, and skin, earning them the nickname “ghost girls.” The company lied. Every day these women were poisoned, intaking a cumulative 20,000 times the maximum permissible body burden for radium. Many of the women developed anemia, bone fractures, and necrosis of the jaw. By 1924, 50 women were ill, and a dozen had died. After workers sued the company, industry safety measures were placed. Eventually, radium based paint was banned in the 1960s.
In the early 20th century, Radium was everywhere. Cosmetics, personal care items, foods, novelty items, and clothing were infused with radium.
Regulations in most cases are written in blood, and it’s important we as a society remember that.

Radium was widely used in the early 20th century, and women working in factories experienced deadly exposure. Radium dust coated the factories, hair, and skin of the workers, causing them to glow in the dark. Now we can enjoy glowing in the dark and under blacklight without the risk of mortality.

The Autumnal Equinox peaks tonight at 5:05 pm MST. Did you know that the Equinox varies year to year because the solar year isn't an exact 365 days? That is also why we have a leap day every 4 years, so our calendar can play catch up with the true solar year. The equinox will be a perfectly even split between day and the night, and will continue to decrease until the winter solstice in December.
