Best known for his watercolor portraits, Samuel Joseph Brown Jr. tended to reserve everyday scenes—like this image of folks cooling off in a makeshift fire-hydrant sprinkler—for his prints.

The first Black American hired in the inaugural U.S. government’s work-relief program for the arts, Brown later worked with the WPA—the Works Progress Administration—in Philadelphia, where he produced prints like this one.

Here he used the linocut technique—carving an image into a block of linoleum—to achieve a flattened appearance that emphasized planar surfaces.
