Support disappears in about three weeks. The impairment lasts twelve to eighteen months.
And somewhere inside that gap, you get handed a job. Researcher Cassidie Carmen Bates named it exactly right: grief hands you a job. Accounts to close, an estate to settle, forms nobody prepared you for, all of it due while you can barely form a sentence.
Meanwhile the casseroles stop. The cards stop. The texts that say let me know if you need anything stop. The world goes back to normal, and that's usually right about when the grieving actually starts.
I built Celebration of Life Seattle for the part nobody brings food for.
A full day at Pier 70 for anyone death has touched. A vendor floor of people who serve loss with dignity, estate attorneys included. A room where hospice workers and widows and daughters and people who don't yet have words for what they've lost sit side by side. Speakers who lived it. And an evening that closes the day in a way nothing else can.
Consider this the modern woman's casserole.

What do you call the grief that comes from losing a relationship, a career, your health, a dream, or the version of life you thought you’d have?
Join me for Losses We Don’t Name, an intimate evening exploring the losses that deeply affect us but rarely get acknowledged.
We’ll talk about loss, intuition, the hard conversations we tend to avoid, and what it means to live well through change.
🪽Conversation + Q&A
🪽Light bites + drinks
🪽Free + open to the public
Come curious. RSVP at the link in bio.

Kinda chic to build a company in the one industry nobody wants to talk about, in a category almost entirely owned by corporations.
Every performance review I ever got marked me down for risk, audacity and assertiveness. Turns out those weren't flaws. They were the job description.
Here's what I keep running into. Most people carrying a loss don't call it grief. They call it stress. Burnout. Being a little off lately. Researchers have a name for the losses we're never given permission to mourn: disenfranchised grief. When nobody around you names it, you don't name it either. You just assume something is wrong with you.
That isn't a personal failure. It's a literacy problem.
And this isn't death positivity. That movement descends from death awareness work going back to the 1950s, and it has done real good. But awareness isn't fluency. Knowing death exists is not the same as having language when it arrives in your life.
Grief literacy is the goal. A culture where people can name what they're carrying, and the people around them know what to say back.
That's what October 10 is for.

What happens in our brains and bodies when we grieve, and how does that shape the way we move through the world?
On October 10, we’re welcoming Cassidie Carmen Bates, MPP, to the Celebration of Life stage for our featured keynote, The Grief Gap: Bridging What Grief Requires and What the World Expects. Cassidie is a TED Talks speaker, grief and bereavement policy researcher, and founder of Soul Executor, LLC. Her work explores grief and bereavement through a policy lens, including how grief affects the brain and body and what that means for the way workplaces support people after a loss. Cassidie’s research is especially focused on creating bereavement leave structures that work for both employees and employers, including the realities faced by those suddenly responsible for managing a loved one’s estate.
In this keynote, Cassidie Carmen Bates, MPP , MPP, brings together research and lived expertise to explore the realities of grief, why there is no one-size-fits-all way to grieve, and how our death-avoidant culture shapes the ways we are supported after loss.
At 1:00 PM, Cassidie is bringing that conversation into the room. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of your own grief, practical ways to advocate for what you need, and tangible tools for creating more grief-informed workplaces, relationships, and communities.

Did you get your ticket yet? 🤍
We’re officially less than 30 days away from Celebration of Life Seattle, and tickets are starting to run low.
On October 10, we’re creating a room for anyone who has lost someone and the practitioners who serve them.
A room for the conversations we don’t have often enough. For community. For connection. For remembering the people we love without being asked when we’re going to “move on.”
Throughout the day, you’ll experience thought-provoking speakers and panels, meet practitioners and organizations supporting people through the emotional and practical realities of loss, and join us for an Evening of Mediumship.
If you’ve been thinking about coming, this is the time to get your tickets. Comment “CELEBRATION” and I’ll send you over the details.
