Hawaiʻi, we have work to do—deeper than many of us know. I hope you hear this perspective as a way forward. As an invitation to question more deeply what we have been taught, including the histories and systems that may be disguised as our own culture simply because they existed before Western colonization. I brought this conversation forward because this page will continue to be a place for curiosity—for exploring the known, the forgotten, and the possibilities we have been taught not to consider. I also wanted you to understand where I may be starting from as I continue sharing these stories. I hope this does not scare you away. I hope it makes you curious. Looking beneath the most visible layer of colonization has given me a deeper sense of clarity. It has helped me understand why some versions of “old Hawaiʻi” still carry feelings of hierarchy, obedience, power, and control. None of this is being shared to create shame or blame. And none of it excuses, minimizes, or turns our attention away from the colonization and occupation that continue to shape Hawaiʻi today. It is simply a call to dig deeper. To question even the histories we have been taught to call our own. To recognize that liberation may require more than returning to the past exactly as it was handed to us. There is so much more to uncover, remember, and discuss. Bring these questions to the table nearest to you—the table where you eat with your family, where stories are shared, where your closest people gather at the end of the day. Discuss this at your table. Ask your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and children what they have heard, what they remember, and what was quietly carried through your family. Let the conversation begin among the people closest to you. And even if you are not Hawaiian, ask yourself: Who decided where your people’s history begins? What might have existed before power shaped the story? And what knowledge may still be alive beneath it all? 08/11/2026
