A Place For Faith Family Salon

Yesterday, someone commented on my page under a picture I had posted, saying that the name of my salon “isn’t for everyone.” At first, I wasn’t going to give it another thought, but today it has weighed heavily on my heart.

I considered sending him a private message because I don’t usually put my personal business on Facebook. However, if I’m being completely honest, he is not the first person I have heard say this. He isn’t the second or third, either—he may be the fourth or fifth.

I have never addressed it because, at the end of the day, my name is on the LLC and no one else’s. But today, I have decided to share the message I originally planned to send him privately. That way, there can be no misunderstanding about why A Place for Faith feels as though it was named especially for me—even if I wasn’t the one who originally chose the name.

Sir, I don’t know who you are, and you don’t know me. You commented that the name of my salon “isn’t for everyone.” You are absolutely right—it isn’t. But before passing judgment, perhaps you should understand why that name means so much to me.

First, I did not choose the name. I bought the salon last year and decided to keep it. Most people who know me—or even know of me—already know my story. Many people call it a beautiful story, but I don’t see it that way. To me, it is a story filled with sadness, regret, and guilt—but it is also a story of redemption, grace, and faith.

Do I owe you an explanation for the name of my salon? Absolutely not. But I am going to give you one because I want you to understand something: I believe in the Lord. I believe in faith, God, heaven, hell, the Bible, and the church.

There was a time when I was nothing more than a drug addict living on the streets. I remained trapped in addiction for 25 years and went to jail 34 times. Still, deep inside, I knew I was a good person. I knew I wanted more from life, but addiction was the only thing I had ever believed I was good at.

Thankfully, I had a mama who prayed for me—and, boy, did she pray.

One day, my mama asked me to enroll in cosmetology school. I told her, “Mama, I’ll never get in, but I’ll try for you.” When I applied, I was told there were only 18 openings and five people ahead of me. Then, two days before classes began, I received a phone call telling me I had been accepted.

Since that day, God has placed one stepping stone after another in front of me, allowing me to take each new step.

After finishing school, I worked for a corporate salon that kept 50% of everything I earned. I generated approximately $120,000 for that company in one year, yet after commission and taxes, I brought home only $42,000. Eventually, I knew it was time to grow, so I stepped outside my comfort zone and accepted a position at A Place for Faith.

Once again, I had no idea what God was preparing to do in my life.

Only two weeks after I started working there, the previous owner told me she planned to sell the salon. I immediately called my mama and said, “Mama, I’ve already failed. I haven’t even been here for two weeks.”

She told me, “Jama, no matter what I have to do, I am going to make sure you get that salon. One thing I will never allow you to feel again is failure.”

My mama begged, borrowed, and did everything she could to help me purchase that salon.

Sir, it was only by faith that I made it through cosmetology school as a single mother raising three children. It was only by faith that I became a successful hairstylist at a corporate salon where I often felt undervalued. It was only by faith that I found the courage to leave the security of that job and walk into a salon I knew nothing about. And it was only by faith that my mama found a way to help me purchase it.

The name A Place for Faith may not give you a reason to believe—but my journey gives me every reason to believe.

So, sir, I sincerely pray that God blesses you as abundantly as He has blessed me. Perhaps the next time you feel compelled to comment on something you know nothing about, you will remember that there may be an entire testimony behind a name.

And let me say that the reason why I never give people my story publicly is because I had four children two of them are 30 one of them are 24 and they have lived this whole life with me. And I don’t want them to have to keep reliving it even though they are my biggest supporters and so proud of me my son is 13. He knows very little about my past life and I usually like to keep it that way because the person I was then and the person I am today are two completely different people.
My children have given me the ok to post this.

I received a phone call from a woman who said, “I’ve seen your work on Facebook, and I need you to do my hair—but there’s one problem. I have box dye on it.”

I immediately said, “Oh, Lord! That changes things a lot!” 😂

Box dye does not always change the final outcome, but it can absolutely change the amount of time, work, and money required to get there. Instead of simply highlighting the hair and applying one toner, I may have to use three different strengths of developer, reapply lightener in certain areas, and carefully blend several different toners to create an even result.

I prepared myself for the worst—but thankfully, she had done exactly what I recommend. Once she realized the color on her hair was not something she wanted to keep, she stopped coloring it. She allowed it to fade, washed it with hot water, used a clarifying shampoo once a week, and waited at least six months before coming to see me.

As you can see in the first picture, her hair had already faded to a lighter brown. Because of that, we were able to lift it beautifully!

However, if you have repeatedly used a level 1, 2, or 3 dark color on your hair for the past year or two, it could take several appointments—and possibly a couple of years—to safely achieve hair like this.

I’m sharing this because no matter how talented or experienced a hairstylist may be, we cannot always take dark, previously colored hair straight to blonde in one appointment. Sometimes your hair must go through orange, gold, or yellow stages before you can safely reach your dream blonde.

Healthy hair will always be more important than rushing the process. Trust your stylist, be patient, and remember: beautiful blonde hair is sometimes a journey, not a single appointment. 💛

I love this cut and color. I love even more that she had no clue her hair was so beautiful. Just just thought it wasn’t healthy thats why it was frizzy. I said no girl your hair is so curly.

Life Christian Academy. That is truly all I have to say—but, at the same time, I could never say enough.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the teachers and the loving, family-oriented atmosphere they have created. Pastor Cecil, his wife, Chrissy, their children, and Chrissy’s mother are some of the most incredible people I have ever been blessed to know.

I do not think Kason has ever thrived in a school the way he is thriving at Life Christian Academy.

In case some of you do not know, my son has severe ADHD and has been medicated since the first grade. In the past, if he did not have his medication, I would not send him to school because it was not fair to him or his teachers. Without it, he struggled tremendously with impulse control.

This year, however, we are navigating school with very little medication—sometimes none at all—and I truly believe that speaks volumes about the environment Life Christian Academy has created for him.

Chrissy is so incredibly patient, loving, and good to Kason. Pastor Cecil gives him those honest, heart-to-heart talks—the kind where he looks at him and says, “Boy, I know you can do better than this.” They do not simply teach my son; they encourage him, believe in him, hold him accountable, and love him through every challenge.

As a mother, there are no words to describe what it feels like to finally see your child thriving in a place where he is understood, supported, and genuinely cared for. It has been such a blessing to our family.
