Carolyn Bradford Thompson (Rotton), 89, of Kodak, Tennessee, passed away January 7, 2026. Born August 6, 1936, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joy A. Rotton and Celestia Pressón; her siblings, Dr. Bill Rotton and Katherine Meyer; her husband, Donald G. Thompson; and her son-in-law, Raymond DeFoe Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Paula Kuebler, Celi McLendon, and April King; her stepson, Donald Thompson; sons-in-law Richard Kuebler and Glenn King; grandchildren Amanda Lindle, Paul Kuebler, Carolyn Lyden, Patrick Effrein, Autumn DeFoe, and Veronica DeFoe; and ten great-grandchildren.
A visionary in the beauty industry, Carolyn was the inventor, founder, and president of Helix Hair Company, creator of the Helix Cutting System, author, motivational instructor, and international platform artist. A devoted Christian, she attended New Hope Church of God for over 30 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held January 19, 2026, at 2:00 PM at New Hope Church of God, 2450 winfield dunn parkway, kodak, tn 37764.
Guests are encouraged to wear party attire filled with glamour, beauty sparkle and color - black attire is discouraged. IT'S SHOW TIME!
Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Encore at New Hope Church.

Getting to know Donna:
Hello, my name is Donna Byington,
I wanted to share a little about myself, my education and my career. I am happily married to my best friend, Roger Byington for an amazing 34 years. We share a daughter, a son in law, 2 granddaughters and a grandson. We truly have been blessed.
I have always had a passion for the Beauty Industry, ever since I was 3 years old. I remember climbing on the back of the couch to fix my little mamaw’s hair and pretend make up on her and other family members.
I began my journey in the Beauty Industry in the early 90’s at Barton’s Cosmetology School in Kingsport, TN and received my Cosmetology license in 1994. Soon after I opened my own salon. I had always dreamed of owning my own salon. I am a firm believer in keeping up with the trends and new techniques by doing on going education.
I have many Certificate’s and Diploma’s for specialty training such as: Advanced Styling, Color Specialist, Extension Specialist, Razor Cuts and much more. I feel there is always something new to learn in the Beauty Industry, that excites me and I always go for it 110%.
In 1998 I was blessed to begin another new exciting journey and began my Advanced Cutting training with the Helix Hair Academy. This education gave me a whole new and different understanding in how I looked at hair – NEVER THE SAME AS BEFORE. I KNOW God placed me in the “Helix” family’s life the very first day of Phase One Class. When I heard the story of Carole Lyden Smith’s dream “The Tornado” it struck a prophetic cord in my heart. I was so horribly frightened of Tornadoes and felt almost cursed with nightmares and memories of being in a few even to the that very day before I heard about her dream.
So, I continued to complete all the Phases of the “Helix Education” and received my PHD status on March 21, 2000. I learned advance Helix cutting techniques, Proven business practices and even learned an artistic ability to increase my designing potential. I continued to grow and maintain my Helix PHD Certification for many years – growing more every day.
I just love the industry so much and I wanted to be able to share my knowledge. I enrolled in an instructor training program in 2014 and became a licensed Educator in cosmetology. My life’s dream and plan were to open a brand-new cosmetology school in my home town, Kingsport, TN. I really believed there was a huge need to be able to teach newcomers to the industry, much more than the basics to pass their boards. They needed to be much more prepared for the working world.
I was blessed to be able to purchase an existing cosmetology school that had been on the decline. Trusting God, I purchased that school February 14, 2015 and renamed it “BellaDonna’s Academy of Cosmetology” and have reestablished the educational reputation and business.
I love being able to share my knowledge to those who are just as excited about the industry as I am. Guiding the professionals in the making and I enjoy seeing my students have that look of AWE when they successfully experience and learn something that’s completely new to them.
Knowing that was where I would be for the duration of my life’s career; doing what I love. God had a much bigger plan for me than what I had in mind. This brings me to the next chapter in my life career. I am a firm believer that “THROUGH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE”.
In December 2018, I was offered the opportunity to be the next generation of Helix – Yes Me! I was offered to purchase the entire company. The Education, Shears and Product line. Therefore, I am very honored and proud to announce on May 1st, 2019 that I, Donna Byington, am the new sole owner of the Helix Hair USA and Helix Designer Hair Care companies.
In conclusion, I would like to make a pledge stating: I will do my very best to continue to provide the same great service, educational training and product line that has been provided by the previous “Helix Family” has done for many years. I wish them success in their future endeavors and in retirement. Relax and Enjoy, the next generation of Helix is safe in Gods hands and with me.
AND REMEMBER THROUGH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!
