In Memory of Leonard Lauder.
Today, we honor the life of Leonard Lauder — a true visionary whose family story is deeply tied to the beauty world we all live in.
Leonard was the son of Estée Lauder, who began by selling her homemade creams to salons — long before the company became a global beauty empire. Under Leonard’s leadership, The Estée Lauder Companies built (and acquired) founder-led brands that shaped generations: Clinique, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Origins — brands many of us grew up with.
But for our world — the professional salon industry — Mr. Lauder made one of his boldest moves when he acquired and . These partnerships marked Estée Lauder’s first true entrance into professional hair, working alongside founders like Horst Rechelbacher (Aveda) and Michael Gordon (Bumble and bumble), who were themselves innovative visionaries — much like Estée had been decades earlier.
I personally worked very closely with Estée Lauder during their purchases all those years ago, and I was so genuinely impressed by Leonard Lauder’s desire to “not integrate” the brands into the “Lauder” way, but rather allow the brands to stand alone and preserve the DNA of the brands.
He definitely saw the artistry, the craft, and the creativity that lived inside the salon world, and the founder-led DNA which gave these brands such clarity in who they were, what they stood for and how they showed up in the market.
Beyond the business, Mr. Lauder was known for his deep generosity, his love of art, and his lifelong respect for the artists and entrepreneurs who make beauty possible.
Today I, along with our entire BTC family, joins the industry in honoring his extraordinary life and legacy.
