From Silicon Valley to a Small Lavender Farm in California

After retiring from a career in Silicon Valley, where he worked as a hardware engineer for over 30 years, Christian bought a small piece of land in 2020 and began growing lavender and grapes. Farming wasn’t a business plan — it was a second chapter.
Lavender farming in California is not easy. Water and other expenses are costly here. Christian told us that the cost of water alone is higher than the revenue from the lavender. Last year, the wine brands he grew grapes for didn’t pay for the harvest, as demand in the industry declined.
Still, the farm continues.
The lavender is grown slowly and organically. Christian showed us how he uses vibrating sound devices to help deter groundhogs from destroying the lavender field. The plants are harvested carefully and distilled in small batches. About 1,000 kg of lavender yields only 1 ml of lavender oil. Nothing is blended or diluted. There are no shortcuts — just time, land, and care.
