A Personal Update ❤️
This summer has been full of experiences and emotions that have changed me in ways I never expected.
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that sometimes “next year” is a promise we make assuming time is guaranteed. The truth is, it isn’t.
While on vacation with my children, I realized I couldn’t keep saying, “I’ll visit my dad next summer.” If I waited, I might lose the opportunity to see him one more time.
My sister and I recently traveled to Portugal after learning that our father is in the final stages of cancer. Our relationship was complicated. He left when we were very young, and for many years our mom raised us with strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love.
Many people might wonder why we chose to go now. The answer is simple: because forgiveness is powerful, and because at the end of the day, we only have one father.
This trip wasn’t about reopening old wounds or revisiting the past. It was about closure. It was about being present. It was about letting him know that despite everything, there is peace in our hearts.
Seeing him, speaking to him, and being able to tell him we forgive him is something I will carry with me forever.
We couldn’t stay as long as we wanted, but I’m grateful that my sister and I were able to be there together. Grateful that we didn’t wait. Grateful for one more chance.
Life is short. Call the people you love. Visit when you can. Forgive when you’re ready. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is closure.
