Day 3 – Lupus Awareness Month 🦋
This post isn’t for “I’m sorry.”
It’s for awareness.
It’s for understanding.
It’s for the people who don’t get it yet.
This is what lupus really looks like—from someone living it.
I can’t fully put into words the frustration of having the drive, the plans, the want to do life… and then having a body that either fights you every step of the way or just shuts down completely.
There was a time I could plan around it.
I’d pick and choose what mattered most, knowing one good day meant a few recovery days after. I built my life around “buffers” just to function—and for a while, that worked.
But years into this… things change.
Now, pushing through isn’t something I can count on.
Now, doing the things I love can cost me physically in ways people don’t see—exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, pain that doesn’t ease, a body that feels like it’s working against me instead of with me.
And that’s the part people don’t understand:
It’s not about being lazy.
It’s not about not wanting to show up.
It’s not about being negative.
It’s about a body that has limits… even when your heart doesn’t.
I’m not sharing this for pity.
I’m sharing it because this is the reality behind the smiles, the posts, the “I’m okay.”
I’m what I call a realistic optimist.
I will always look for the good—but I’m also honest enough to say…
sometimes this is really hard.
Life doesn’t pause when you’re struggling.
It doesn’t slow down to meet you where you are.
So in those moments, we do what we can:
We dig deep.
We find strength we didn’t ask for.
We keep going in ways that may not look strong to the outside world—but they are.
So if you don’t live with lupus, just know this:
Sometimes the strongest thing we do all day…
is keep going.
