Who made everyone the authority on how locs are supposed to go? Like we can really control hair, lol. Every head of hair is as unique as DNA.
As long as my clientsβ hair starts healthy and stays healthy throughout their journey, who am I to tell them anything? The same goes for anyone doing locsβeveryone has their own way of braiding, caring for natural hair, and starting locs.
Iβm a little more open because of the researcher in me (biology & psychology major, lol). I know the history of our hair. Iβve learned the history of locs, natural styles, and braidsβhow they were used as escape maps during slavery, and how our hair became a symbol of freedom, spirituality, and self-expression.
How you start your locs is YOUR journey. Donβt ever let anyone tell you thereβs a βrightβ or βwrongβ way. If it works for you, nobody can tell you it canβt. Iβm all one for learning because I love seeing people do things different ways and teaching better and easier transitions. But letβs be positive.
Locs come in so many formsβtraditional, freeform, micro, and more. They can be started with interlocking, coils, twists, braids, wrapping, etc., just like our ancestors did long before we came to America.
So have fun with your hair. Life is already serious enough. Just keep it cute, healthy, and Black! β¨π€
