Beauty and more

…when I stopped rushing through every moment + simply let things take as much time as they needed.

👇🏼👇🏼

I used to approach my work as a mother + homemaker with a sense of urgency.

Everything had to be done now—or even better, 5 minutes ago. Every part of my day was a race against the clock.

I felt I was somehow failing if dinner wasn’t made + on the table in the 15-20 minutes that the recipe allotted, or like I was doing something wrong if my son wouldn’t go down for his nap right away and I had to spend extra time supporting him to sleep.

I was frustrated that all these little tasks were taking up my precious time because honestly? deep down I was worried that what I was doing—tending to the mundane + the everyday things that fill up our days as mothers and homemakers—wasn’t enough.

I felt guilty that other women somehow managed to juggle thriving careers plus all the demands of children and home and here I was, letting the minutes and hours of my days slip away to the simple, mostly unseen things within the four walls of my home.

I’d like to say that one day the lightbulb just switched on and I realized the value + holy worth of the work I was doing at home,

but it definitely took time and even now I’m still learning…

Learning to let things take their space + time. To not always rush through the day but pause for the important things.

To allow myself to enjoy the journey + relish in the moment.

To embrace the simple work before me and give thanks in the midst of it all instead of wishing it away.

To be proud + grateful for what I’ve accomplished in a day— even if it was mostly unseen things that no one else will notice, applaud, or pay me for.

And to give myself permission to not always do everything in double time, but instead, accept that the work I’m doing matters + therefore is allowed to take up my time.

As Mae West put it, “Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.”

So when the toddler is dragging his feet + 5 minutes turns into 25, or when the baby needs nursed 4x during an errand run, or siblings squabble so dinner prep turns into an hour-long affair, take heart + take your time, mama:

All those minutes matter 🤍 08/15/2023
