Marie Loth Lockett, beloved mother, grandmother, Gigi, bonus mom, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Junction City, Oregon, on August 17, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born in Newcastle, Wyoming, on July 18, 1938, to Jacob and Thelma Loth, Marie spent her early years in Wyoming before her family moved to Belle Fourche, South Dakota. She graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1956.

Shortly after graduation, Marie married Ralph Barnard. Together, they traveled north along the Alcan Highway to Alaska, where they eventually homesteaded in Kenny Lake on the Copper River. They cleared the land, built a log cabin, and raised their children, Kris & Kevin.

Marie embraced the adventure of Alaska life and instilled in her children a love of nature through fishing, berry picking, gardening, camping, and exploring. She filled their cabin with music, laughter, and the sound of her singing in the kitchen. Her strength and resilience were especially evident when the Great Alaska Earthquake struck in 1964 while the family was living at the homestead.

Marie and Ralph later moved to Anchorage, where they built their home on O’Malley Road in 1966. Although they divorced in 1977, Marie and Ralph remained lifelong friends.

Marie worked many jobs throughout her life before retiring from the State of Alaska. In 1979, she married Kent Lockett, and together they traveled throughout the country. After living in Oregon for some years Marie & Kent returned to Alaska and built their home in Funny River, Alaska. When Kent passed away in 2011 Marie moved back to Oregon for the remainder of her life.

Becoming a grandmother was one of Marie’s greatest joys. She loved to say, “You don’t know true love until the first grandchild.” She treasured her grandchildren—Tony, Jacob, Liz, Kate, and bonus girl Lisa—and was lovingly known as Gigi to her great grandkids.

Marie was known for her compassion, kindness, generosity, and resilience. She had a deep passion for helping those who were less fortunate. Her home always had an open door, and many of her lifelong friends became like family.

Marie enjoyed gardening, traveling, staying connected with lifelong friends, and making quilts to wrap her loved ones in. Marie especially loved Hawaii, and “Kenai River” bluegreen was her favorite color.

Marie is survived by her son, Kevin Barnard (Janet); her daughter, Kris Boots (Dan); her grandchildren, Tony Adame, Jacob Strouckel, Liz Potter (Kyle), Kate Strouckel (Kevin Best), and Lisa Donnally (Steve); her sister Joann Durbin and many nieces and nephews who loved her too. She is also survived by her step children Ross Lockett (Val), David Lockett and Jeanine Berry (Rick).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kent Lockett; her parents, Jacob and Thelma Loth; her step son Jon Lockett and her nephew, Roger Durbin.

A funeral service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Junction City, Oregon on September 5 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, Marie requested that memorials be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 926 W. 6th Ave. Junction City, OR 97448.

Marie leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, service, friendship, and family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
