In the 13th century, barbers separated into two classes: those who practiced the traditional act of cutting hair and those who performed various surgeries.

A "devilock" cut features short hair in the back and sides, with long hair in the front that is combed forward. Conversely, a "mullet" is a haircut that is short on the top and sides, but long in back.

The first state to require the licensing of barbers was Minnesota, which did so in 1897. This followed closely on the heels of the germ theory of medicine and the realization that strict adherence to uniform sanitary standards could help control the spread of diseases and illnesses.

The perm, or permanent wave, was invented by Marcel Grateau in 1872 and was used on both men and women. The use of heated tongs and a chemical solution creates a breakdown of the hairs cells, making them easier to reform.
