The beauty industry is one of the most physically demanding service fields in America.
Long hours on your feet.
Repetitive motion.
Emotional labor.
Client management.
High stress.
Low margins.
And the constant pressure to “show up smiling,” no matter what life is throwing at you.

Veterans of this industry have endured decades of this labor without ever calling it what it truly is: extreme labor. The kind of labor that wears down the body, drains the mind, and slowly erodes the future if you’re not saving or investing from day one. Because unlike other professions, salon work comes with no built‑in retirement, no medical benefits, no long‑term financial safety net, and no guarantee that your body will still be able to perform the work as you age. These needs will arise because the physical and mental stress of this industry is real. It is daily. It is cumulative. And it is costly.

The truth is simple:
If no one speaks up about the realities of salon labor, the future remains perilous for many who have given their entire lives to this profession.

This message is not meant to diminish the beauty of the work or the pride professionals take in their craft. It is meant to honor it — honestly. To acknowledge the labor behind the artistry.
To recognize the sacrifices behind the smiles. And to remind every beauty professional that their work is worthy of respect, protection, and a plan for the future. Labor Day is a celebration of workers.

This year, let it also be a recognition of the hard labor of the salon industry — and a call to build a future where beauty professionals can thrive, not just survive.

On August 7, 1989, I opened my doors with a dream, a lot of determination, and a heart full of hope for what the future might bring.

Today, 37 years later, I look back with a heart full of gratitude.
