“The body doesn’t reward force. It rewards precision.”

In manual therapy, more pressure doesn’t automatically mean better results.

Anyone can push harder.

The skill is knowing where to apply pressure, how much to use, how long to stay there, and when the body has given you enough information to move on.

Too much force can turn treatment into another stressor or something the nervous system has to protect against.

That’s why we don’t measure a successful session by how deep we went or how sore someone feels afterward.

We measure it by change.

Did the movement improve?
Did the muscle test differently?
Did the pain response change?
Did the body give us a different answer when we retested?
Even months later?

Manual therapy shouldn’t be a competition between the therapist and the tissue.

Assess. Apply. Listen. Retest.

Because sometimes the smallest yet most precise input creates the biggest change.

More isn’t better. Better is better.

The goal isn’t to use more pressure
•
The goal is to use the right pressure
•
Over time, that idea evolved into something bigger
•
Patience Under Pressure
•
Pressure is a dose
•
Just like medicine, too little may not create meaningful change
•
Too much can overwhelm the nervous system
•
Somewhere in between is where adaptation happens
•
That’s why we work within a consistent pressure range of 5–7 out of 10
•
Not because every body is the same, but because every body deserves the same respect
•
The force changes from one area to another
•
The tools change
•
The contact area changes
•
But the philosophy stays the same
•
A 7 in the upper back may require more force than a 7 in the lower back
•
A calf may feel much more tender than either (due to factors like stagnation in blood flow or lymphatics)
•
A thumb feels different than a palm
•
A forearm feels different than an elbow
•
The goal is never to chase pain
•
The goal is to communicate with the nervous system
•
That’s why treatment is always a conversation between three people:

Our hands.
Your voice.
The nervous system.
•
We don’t increase pressure because we can
•
We increase it only when today’s 7 becomes tomorrow’s 6, and eventually a 5
•
That’s adaptation
•
The same principle exists everywhere in biology
•
Nobody gets stronger after one workout
•
Nobody becomes healthier after one salad
•
A plant doesn’t grow because you drown it with water
•
Healing responds to consistency, not excess
•
Manual therapy is no different
•
More isn’t better
•
Better is better
•
So if there’s one idea I hope you remember from this series, it’s this:

The body doesn’t reward force.

It rewards precision.

Patience Under Pressure.

Did you know your nerves have nerves? ⚡️
•
They’re called nervi nervorum (tiny nerves that help support and monitor larger nerves)
•
Nerves also have their own blood supply 🩸
•
This is important because slow blood flow means slow healing, and no blood flow means no healing ❤️‍🩹
•
When people hear the word neuropathy, they often think of diabetes 💉
•
While diabetes and chemotherapy can absolutely contribute to neuropathy, not all neuropathy is systemic 👨‍⚖️
•
Some neuropathies are mechanical 👷🏽
•
A great example is , where the tibial nerve becomes irritated or compressed as it passes through the inside of the ankle 🗜️
•
In these cases, the issue may be influenced by posture, gait mechanics, joint position, muscle tension, or structural stress 😭
•
At Neuro Muscle Works, we use the Hypertonic Anatomy Model (HAM) to identify predictable patterns of muscle guarding and movement dysfunction 🌐
•
While there is no universal study supporting the exact patterns we observe, years of hands-on assessment have revealed consistent relationships involving the tibial and fibular nerve systems ⚖️
•
Our goal is simple:

Find the source
Assess the pattern
Restore movement
Reduce unnecessary stress on the nervous system
•
Whether neuropathy is systemic or mechanical, understanding the difference is often the first step toward finding the right solution.

We often think about pain only in terms of joints or muscles, but there are also key transition zones in the body that sometimes grab patients and clinician’s attention 🚨
•
We think of these as functional diaphragms 🧱
•
These are areas like the thoracic outlet, the respiratory diaphragm, the pelvic diaphragm, the femoral triangle, and the popliteal fossa 📝
•
They are regions where movement, pressure, blood flow, lymph flow, nerve flow, and tissue tension all have to coexist well ⛓️
•
The problem is that posture influences all of them 🧘‍♀️
•
Long hours at a desk, driving, guarding after stress, training hard without enough recovery, and even the way we sleep can all change the pressure around these spaces ⛓️‍💥
•
Over time, tissues can become more hypertonic, less adaptive, and less fluid ⛲️
•
When that happens, flow slows down 🚰
•
Blood does not move as efficiently 💉
•
Lymph does not drain as well ♻️
•
The body starts to feel heavier, stiffer, more irritated, and sometimes more tender than it should 💊
•
That stagnation over time becomes a problem that can grow 📈
•
Stagnation can lead to more discomfort, more sensitivity, more protective tone, and more compensation 🥴
•
In other words, the body begins to protect itself more, but that protection can eventually become part of the problem 🌐
•
This is why we pay attention to these zones 🧩
•
Not only to chase pain, but to improve the space where things need to move 💆🏻
•
Sometimes that means hands on work 🙌
•
Sometimes it means better breathing 😮‍💨
•
Sometimes it means changing how you sleep, how you sit, how often you move, or how much tension you carry without realizing it 🎒
•
The goal is simple 🥅
•
Improve the body’s ability to flow, adapt, and recover 🔄
•
Less stagnation
Better drainage
Better movement
Better output
•
Protection precedes pain 🗣️
•
So if we can understand what the body is protecting, we can often understand why it hurts 🙉

Facet joints are the small joints between each vertebra that help guide movement through the spine 🩻
•
They are not all oriented the same 🔄
•
The cervical and thoracic regions allow more rotation, while the lumbar spine is built much more for flexion and extension and much less for twisting 🌪️
•
When rotation keeps getting forced into an area that is not designed for it, irritation can build 🎚️🔈🔉🔊
•
Add in one-sided hypertonicity and the problem gets even louder 📢
•
When one side is holding more neural-tone than the other, the spine can start to rotate, compress, and load unevenly 🎭
•
Over time, that can create irritation around the facet joints and the tissues that support them 😡
•
Within the , we can look at the way hypertonic muscles can distort movement before pain shows up clearly on imaging 🔮
•
A muscle can look strong on the surface but still be holding excessive tone and changing how the spine moves 🫥
•
That altered tension can keep feeding asymmetry, especially with rotation-based sports and repetitive movement ⛳️
•
Pain is not always just about damage, as we’ve seen with spine surgeries list 📋
•
Sometimes it is about how the body is being pulled, compressed, and guided through motion 🧑‍🦯
•
If one side is more hypertonic than the other, the facet joints may be dealing with the consequence 💫
