• Alopecia Areata – An autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss.

• Alopecia Totalis – Complete loss of hair on the scalp.

• Alopecia Universalis – Complete loss of hair on the scalp and body.

• Androgenetic Alopecia – The most common type of hair loss, often influenced by genetics and hormones.

• Traction Alopecia – Hair loss caused by repeated pulling or tension from tight hairstyles.

• Telogen Effluvium – Temporary shedding that can occur after stress, illness, surgery, childbirth, medications, or major life changes.

• Scarring Alopecia – A group of conditions that permanently damage hair follicles, making early diagnosis important.

Hair loss affects people of all ages and backgrounds. Every alopecia journey is unique, and understanding the different types can help us replace assumptions with compassion and support.

Hello, my name is Allison, and I’m the owner of a quaint salon in South Portland, Maine. If you've visited my salon, you might already know my story, but today I'm opening up about my struggle with Alopecia Universalis.

My journey started when I was just 20 years old, when a difficult period in my life left me with large patches of missing hair. I thought that chapter was closed. But 30 years later, the stress of my mom’s health struggles triggered it all over again. This time, it’s here to stay.

I’m sharing my story to step into the world of millions who live with alopecia, break the stigma, and help everyone understand this autoimmune disorder. Stay tuned.

As anyone who knows our salon knows, we have a deep love for the ocean—and for dogs… really, for all animals. When I recently caught up with my longtime friend, Mark Donovan, we started talking about showcasing some of his incredible artwork in the salon. That’s when Peaches arrived—a beautifully hand-carved and painted lab.

In such a short time, Peaches has made quite a splash with us. Knightville is such a warm, dog-loving community here in SoPo, and we have pups stopping by for visits all day long.
