Historically, it was the habit of early missionaries to liken Legba to the Christian devil, whose evil nature must be feared. However, Legba is neither demon nor devil, nor is he Satan himself. In fact, he is arguably the most important and beloved spirit in the New Orleans Voudou pantheon. He serves as the guardian of the Poto Mitan, the center of power and support in the sacred temples. All ceremonies begin and end with him, and there can be no communication with any of the other spirits without consulting him first. Papa Legba is the cunning celestial trickster, master linguist, warrior, guardian of crossroads and entrances, and destiny’s personal messenger.

Papa Legba’s gift for linguistics enables him to translate the requests of humans into the languages of the spirits. In Legba’s vévé—his ritual symbol—is the crossroads. He is known by several names in New Orleans: Papa Legba, Papa Alegba, Papa Labas, and Papa Limba. During Mardi Gras season, a popular shout by revelers is “A Labas!” This is a reference to St. Peter, who has functioned for over a hundred years as the Catholic cloak for Legba in New Orleans Voudou.

So, Legba is not the devil or Satan personified, but he is syncretized with some Catholic saints. In Haiti and Cuba, he is syncretized with St. Anthony, St. Lazarus, and sometimes St. Peter. In New Orleans, he is strongly associated with St. Peter and St. Anthony. Wherever he is found, he is the consummate trickster, seamlessly adapting to the environments in which he is found.

Dahomean (Fon) cosmology tells us that Legba was the first of the gods to make gbo, as it was gifted to him by the forest spirits called Azizzas. The Azizzas are small monkey-like creatures who sometimes live in ant beds and termite mounds and make themselves known to hunters. Gbo is the original system of magick that informs how to construct and use charms that address the everyday conditions of life, much like our American hoodoo and rootwork. The Azizzas taught Legba the original mysteries of the leaves and the proper formula for constructing gbo, including combining ingredients and observing taboos.

Back in the day, when the gods were hungry and before the people fed them, Legba was up to his usual shenanigans. This time, he created gbo in the form of a snake and placed it in the middle of the road leading to the market so that passersby would encounter it. He instructed the snake to bite everyone who walked by, which it did. When a person was bitten, Legba would run up to them and ask for an offering in exchange for a cure. Once he was paid, however, he would run to the market and get his fill of his favorite drink, akasan, along with palm oil and water and partake of everything himself.

One day, a man stopped and pointed at the snake and asked Legba, “What is this thing in the road that bites people?”

Legba replied, “It is a gbo. Bring me two chickens, eighty cowries and some straw and I will make a gbo for you.”

When the man returned with the requested offerings, Legba instructed him on making gbo. He told the man to throw a vine on the ground, which he did, and it promptly turned into a poisonous snake and started biting people. This time, Legba also gave the man the curing gbo, the medicine needed to cure snake bites. The man’s name was Awe; thus, Awe is the first human to receive gbo.

All of the African gods need gbo to be able to cure. It is Legba, however, who knows more than any other god about gbo, which gives him the distinct advantage of curing or causing disorder. And while Legba continues to be the first spirit to be called upon in Voudou rituals, the reason that this is done is not commonly known. The most common understanding for petitioning Legba first is because he is the gatekeeper to the spirit world. As such, he allows or denies the other spirits to come through to help humans when they are called upon.

Beyond this reason, however, is the Fon belief that Legba is acknowledged first because he knows more gbo than any other spiritual or physical being. Thus, calling on him first is to demonstrate honor and respect for his position as the ultimate conjure doctor.
