Everyone knows eye colour and hair colour run in families. Far fewer people realise that the shape of your hair is one of the most strongly inherited things about you. 🧬

Hair curl is roughly eighty five to ninety five per cent heritable in people of European descent. That is higher than height. It is one of the most predictable traits we have, which is why a curl skipping a generation and surfacing again on a grandchild is such a common family observation, and why the family is almost always right about it.

The mechanism is beautifully physical. A hair follicle that is round in cross section pushes out a round hair, and a round hair grows straight. A follicle that is oval pushes out a flattened hair, and a flattened hair cannot help bending. The more oval the follicle, the tighter the curl. It is not really the hair that curls. It is the hole it comes out of.

What decides that shape is partly a gene called TCHH, which sits on chromosome one and makes a protein called trichohyalin. Trichohyalin is part of the internal scaffolding that hardens a hair as it forms inside the follicle, cross linking the keratin and setting the shape before the hair ever sees daylight. Common variants of TCHH tilt a person toward straight or toward wavy, and it came out as the single strongest signal for hair curl in people of European ancestry.

It is not the only one. Several genes contribute and the effects stack. But TCHH is a good part of the reason that so much northern European hair sits in that maddening middle ground which is not straight, is not curly, and will not be told what to do in damp weather.

Which, if you have ever stood outside in Scottish rain, is genuinely useful information about your ancestry.

Here is what makes it worth more than a fact. Family resemblance is usually a soft thing. An impression. A way of standing. This one is measurable. The wave in a child's hair in Ontario or Otago is the same wave, made by the same instruction, that came out of a glen nobody in that family has laid eyes on for two hundred years.
