When you get professional teeth whitening done, the whitening gels (containing the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide) are strong enough to pe*****te through the pores of the enamel and reach the deeper layer called dentin, where stains are broken down into smaller molecules through an oxidation process. This is what makes our teeth appear whiter!

It really is such a simple process… HOWEVER, it’s not as simple when each person’s enamel structure/genetics vary. The same exact treatment can be done on two people, but the outcomes might differ. Some people whiten easier, faster or brighter than others.

Our ENAMEL 🦷

Enamel thickness differs among everyone and this is determined by genetics and how the tooth developed, but it changes/thins throughout our lifetime due to the natural aging process and our lifestyle habits (what we consume and our oral hygiene). Thicker enamel can whiten easier and might not be as prone to sensitivity. Thinner enamel can show the underlying dentin (yellow) more and can be more prone to sensitivity.

How porous our enamel is also makes a difference. The more porous, the easier the whitening gels can diffuse through, making whitening happen faster. This can also mean that sensitivity might occur more due to faster diffusion of the gels and if the gels are too strong and left on the teeth too long. More porous enamel can also stain easier.

There are several other factors beyond just our tooth structure that affect the whitening process, such as the concentration and quality of the gels, the treatment time, the type of staining present, etc.

✨ There are many whitening options out there and most people don’t realize how and when to use them. They are not all created equal.

✨ Teeth whitening falls into 2 categories. 1) At home and 2) Professional.

✨ At home products are done with OTC products because they have a MUCH lower concentration of whitening power due to safety and anyone can use them. These products in most cases, will not get you more than a couple shades brighter and require days to weeks of usage. They are only capable of removing surface stains. Not all stains stay on the surface of your teeth. The longer they are on there, the deeper they start to go. Some examples of at home whitening include toothpastes, strips and gels/trays. These are best used as maintenance between professional sessions.

✨ Professional whitening is either done at a dental office or chair side at a private professional studio. The concentration of the gels is much stronger to target more than just the surface stains and they work much quicker. The deep or stubborn stains are able to be removed and in some cases, medication and development stains can also be targeted. These chair side whitenings should only be done by a trained or certified teeth whitening specialist due to safety. A meticulous application of gels and protection of the gums are critical. Typically only 1 or 2 sessions are needed and you will notice results instantly.
