My Salon Life/Lessons: 20 min manicure

Hello folks in mani-land. Let’s talk about our favorite thing: service time. We all understand pricing for our time. Yea! But have you ever had a client just want it quick (re: cheaper)?

Story time: I got a call inquiring what I charge for a 20 min manicure.

Me- “Like, start to finish total 20 minutes?”
Caller- “Yeah.”

Oh dear lord I had so many things I wanted to say. But I ended up with

Me- “That sounds like a polish change and I don’t offer that service. I schedule 75 minute full service manicures for $65.”

Caller- “But I just want them polished.”

Again, so many things I wanted to say. Just ended up with

Me- “I can’t do the quality of work I’m proud of in that short amount of time.”

So, that ended that call. Sorry not sorry.
But it really got me thinking of the meme circulating recently about ‘normalizing a longer service’. Not being afraid or feeling judged of taking the time you need to do great work. AND charging accordingly.
Here’s my take:

Let’s say you’ve done all the prep and it’s time to polish. Gel polish takes 4 layers: base, 2 color, topcoat. That’s 40 fingers.

40 opportunities to touch product to skin.
40 opportunities to miss a spot.
40 opportunities to miss capping the tip.
40 opportunities to fight with fuzzies.

I can’t do that in 5 minutes. It takes time to be meticulous. And clients are already comparing our salon ‘one hour work’ with five hour Instagram work so how the hell can we do it in 20 mins to match their budget?
