One of my absolute favorite things to do is travel with my family, but one of my biggest responsibilities as a leader is making sure my team never feels like they’re left to sink or swim while I’m gone…
A lot of people assume leaving your salon is stressful (especially when it’s for 2 weeks 😬), but I’ve learned that how it feels while I’m away usually says the most about my leadership - the good, the bad, and the ugly!
Before I leave, I always make a point to:
+ restock our inventory (because running out of color halfway through my vacation is not the vibe 😂)
+ connect 1:1 with each team member
+ deep clean the salon so everything feels fresh
+ stock up on extra color, foils, drinks, and snacks
+ schedule our social media for the month
+ send a few handwritten thank you cards to clients who have shown us extra love recently
+ find a way to surprise my team (sometimes it’s words of encouragement, sometimes it’s a handwritten card to each of them, and sometimes it’s Venmoing them and saying lunch is on me)
A lot of people think you can’t own a business and actually step away without everything falling apart… but in my experience how things run while I’m gone is the clearest reflection of what we’ve built together… like the culture, the systems, the trust - ALL OF IT!
Of course one of the best parts of traveling is the memories made, but honestly… one of my favorite parts is coming back in and seeing that everything is still running smoothly, clients are taken care of, and my team absolutely crushed it without me!
There’s something really fun about walking back in, hearing how the week went, and getting to tell them how proud you are of how they handled everything that came their way!

I’m endlessly grateful for this team + all they pour into our clients and each other every day! If I can help carry some of the load behind the scenes so they can focus on what they do best, that’s a role I’m always happy to play!

Want to know my secret approach for every color that sits in my chair? First I start by assessing what areas need to be lighter vs darker, but then I take it one step further…
For Sarah, I knew our end goal was to be a low maintenance yet bright blonde, which meant I needed to do 2 things to blend her extensions- brighten her natural hair and lowlight her extensions, but how do you know how much to do where so everything blends at the end?!
It helps my brain to break the areas up into %. For example, on Sarah we needed to highlight about 50-75% of her natural color (since it was almost solid dark) which also meant I needed to lowlight about 25% of her extensions (so the remaining 75% of her extensions would remain light) which resulted in an even color throughout!
Looking at the hair that’s left behind helps me to gauge how much has been colored and how much hasn’t! Let me know if this tip helps!
I’m still soaking up all the knowledge and love from the past few days, but I’ve never left an event with + without being completely speechless!

Contradictory things about me that I’ll never be able to explain 🙃
+ I don’t like vinegar, but love salt vinegar chips
+ I don’t like cooking but loving concocting new recipes for smoothies and juices
+ I love Free People but refuse to spend $40+ on a shirt from Target
+ I like bananas but not banana flavored things
+ I like reality tv but hate drama
+ I don’t like history but love a documentary
+ I love audiobooks but can’t stay focused or get too tired with a physical copy
+ I love traveling but hate planning it
+ I love pizza but don’t like warm tomatoes
+ I love starting projects but not finishing them; but I don’t mind finishing the projects my husband has started
+ I love Survivor but don’t love the outdoors
+ I love neutrals but love when others decorate with color

We all know the drill… you look at your book (knowing good and well you don’t have anything within the next 4 weeks) just to end up coming in early, staying late, or coming in on a day off to help “Susan” out…
