I’m going to say something that may not sit well with everyone — but education over ego, always.

Let’s talk about onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. It most commonly affects toenails and can cause:

• Thickening of the nail
• Yellow, brown, or white discoloration
• Crumbling or brittle edges
• Lifting from the nail bed
• Odor
• Debris buildup under the nail

It is not “just an ugly nail.”
It is not “just dry.”
It is not something you should cover with polish and ignore.

It is a fungal infection.

And if your toe(s) look like that — you should not be getting a pedicure.

Any properly trained, ethical nail professional should refuse service when a fungal infection is present. Why? Because working over an active infection increases risk of spreading fungal spores — to tools, to surfaces, and potentially to other clients. It also delays proper medical treatment for you.

Here’s the part that may make some people uncomfortable.

I have worked inside salons.

I have personally witnessed procedures being done incorrectly — and when you question it, you’re told the sanitation methods you were originally taught are “wrong” because they take too long.

Let’s talk about pedicure chairs.

You may see a tech spray disinfectant and wipe the bowl down before you sit. It looks clean. It smells clean. It feels reassuring.

But here’s what many clients don’t realize:

Fungal organisms thrive in warm, moist environments. Many whirlpool pedicure chairs have internal pipes and jets. If those pipes are not properly flushed, scrubbed, and disinfected according to manufacturer and state board standards, biofilm can develop inside the tubing. That biofilm can harbor bacteria and fungi that are not removed by a quick spray and wipe.

Proper cleaning of a piped pedicure spa should include:

• Draining and scrubbing the basin with soap and water
• Flushing the system with an approved disinfectant solution for the full required contact time
• Running the jets so disinfectant circulates through internal pipes
• Draining and rinsing
• Allowing appropriate drying time
• Performing a deeper documented cleaning at the end of each day

Not a 30-second spray and swirl.

If that full protocol is skipped or rushed, you are not sitting in a sterile environment — no matter how good it smells.

When KlawzbyKarlee opens its doors, this is one of the primary standards I will not compromise on.

There will be no jetted pedicure chairs.

I will be using copper pedicure basins — non-piped, fully visible, fully scrubbed, fully disinfected between every single client. No hidden tubing. No mystery buildup. No shortcuts.

Copper is also naturally antimicrobial, which adds an additional layer of protection when paired with proper sanitation procedures.

This industry needs more transparency.

If a nail professional refuses service because they suspect fungus — that is not rudeness. That is protection. For you. For other clients. For the integrity of the salon.

Healthy nails first. Always.

Education isn’t meant to offend — it’s meant to protect.
