Things I’ve learned in 21 years as a hairstylist…
Competition doesn’t exist. There’s enough to go around. Your only real competition is becoming better than you were yesterday.
Some of your best friends will be hairstylists and salon owners. Some will walk beside you from the beginning of your career to the end.
Everyone has something to teach you—if you’re willing to listen. Never get too experienced to keep learning.
Most salon issues starts with hurt feelings and a conversation that should happened. Talk to each other. Give people the opportunity to listen, explain and apologize.
Your schedule will change as your life changes. Nights, weekends, long days… and eventually, maybe fewer of them. Your career should evolve with your life.
A lot of us pushing 40 built our books working 10–12 hour days, nights and weekends—with ZERO social media. We built it on referrals & business cards. BUT burnout is real! Take care of yourself.
Being fully booked doesn’t always mean you’re making money. Know your numbers.
Clients will come and go. You won’t be everyone’s hairstylist forever—and that’s okay.
And if you become a salon owner, your job becomes so much "more"! You’re the problem solver, the shoulder to cry on and the person who has to have the hard conversations.
Being the owner NEVER makes you above the work. Clean the toilet. Fold the towels. Answer the phone. Take out the trash.
Leadership isn’t doing less because you’re the owner. It’s being willing to do what needs to be done because you are the owner.
21 years later, I’m still learning—and I hope I always am. 🤍

Hairstylists, we spend YEARS taking care of everyone else—but we need to take care of ourselves too. 🤍
Think about what our bodies are exposed to every day: hair color, lightener, aerosols, fragrances, cleaning products, hours on our feet…the list goes on.
The good news? Supporting your body doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
A little morning movement, better ventilation, gloves, hydration, comfortable clothing, sauna when you can, changing out of your salon clothes when you get home—small habits add up.
We may not be able to eliminate every exposure that comes with our career, but we can be more intentional about the things we CAN control.
Your body is the most important tool you bring to the salon every day. Take care of it. 🤍
